Upgrade Advice: GPU & RAM

You should easily be able to get your RAM running at the correct speed by enabling the XMP profile in the second BIOS screenshot you posted.

Unfortunately you'll still be left with a virtually stock speed processor.

I'll enabled it then run CPU-Z again and post an update.

I have to say I'm extremely disappointed the processor isn't overclocked. Is that due to the change in Motherboard or was it sent out to me stock?

The overclocked settings are stored on the motherboard.

If it's been replaced then unless they re-did the overclock it will be at stock settings.

That's unfortunate. If something like that ever happens again I'll make sure to mention to the Technician I'd like the overclock reinstated. I shouldn't have just presumed they'd do it.

The RAM is looking much better now.

Is there anything I can do to improve the CPU performance? Things that aren't too complicated.

The RAM is looking as it should now but you'll find that if you overclock the processor you'll likely have to change the settings again.

You can have a go at overclocking the processor yourself.

I understand the basic principles on X58 but never owned one myself so don't feel 100% confident in giving you specific advice on how to do it.

If you search there are plenty of guides on overclocking the X58 platform or if you start a thread in the Overclocking & Cooling section of the forum I'm sure someone who has hands on experience with the platform can point you in the right direction.

I would suggest that if you're going to have a go then save the settings you have now to a profile.

At the BIOS main screen press F11 and you should be able to store your current settings.

If the worst comes to the worst you can always reset the BIOS and then just reload the stored profile.

Good luck.

I doubt I have the time, knowledge or patience to overclock. Mainly I lack the confidence so I think I'll just leave it stock for now.

I can't thank you enough for your help over the last couple of days. You've been extremely helpful and most importantly, patient.

In regards to the RAM upgrade, when I get it. Will I just post in this thread or start a new thread in the memory sub forum?

You're welcome.

Both the Kingston and the Corsair RAM we discussed have an XMP profile so setting them up should be as easy as you've just experienced.

When you change the RAM you may be asked to go into the BIOS to confirm the settings but as long as the XMP profile is enabled they should work fine.

Just bump this thread if you need any further help.

A short update for you Surveyor.

The Mrs decided to get the RAM for my X-mas so I went with the Corsair, seeing as I didn't have to pay for it myself. ;)

Installed it this afternoon and switched the XMP to Profile 2. Took no more than 5 minutes and it's working great.
