I have a P4 2.8 with 1GB of RAM @ PC2100 speeds. Mobo is not capable of overclocking. Its AGP, and running a 22" LCD...

Its presently running a 9800Pro, but needs more gaming power.

I'll be upgrading the GFx card, but not sure how far to go before the other components become the bottleneck...

I'm thinking a 7600GT - but will it be worth going higher?

Cheers,

M

Cheers for reply -

1) Do you think going any higher/better would be a waste?

2) Would an x800XT (PE maybe) be more powerful than a 7600GT?

And i forgot to mention - its running with a 22" LCD screen, so needs to power some serious pixels...

Cheers,

M

I do think that you could run the risk of 'overmatching' the graphics card to the CPU as it isn't hugely powerful. The X800XTPE would be about on a par with a 7600GT or slightly behind and it doesn't have SM3, not that it actually makes much of a difference really. I'd just aim for the best price out of the graphics cards mentioned as any are a big jump from a 9800pro. :)

//edit, just saw your edit, if you can get a good price on an X1950pro or 7800GS then they are worth considering but I think the CPU might prove a limiting factor.

I would definately go for the ATI X1950 pro, its an AGP card, and I have a similar setup to you, albeit a 3Ghz P4 and it was a very dramatic improvement, especially at higher resolutions.
