Hi guys, I'm out of the loop re: current tech so looking for some advice! I'm hoping to upgrade my PC, ideally using some current components.
I use the PC mainly for gaming, but also some hobby level Video editing and occasional work (adobe suite)
I have a 1080p monitor and also a 4k monitor which will stay. I much prefer the IQ on the 4k and use it 95% of the time, inc gaming (which is the main problem / strain due to my gpu!) however, I mainly play total war games and don't need to play AAA FPS games on max settings 60FPS
I also notice that the 4gb memory on the gtx980 is bare minimum to do any light video editing- definitely a bottleneck.

Current system:
Plenty of nice fast ssds for storage and Windows so that'll stay
Z170 board with i7-6700k @4.5ghz
32GB corsair vengeance DDR4 3200
Antec Truepower 650w PSU- this is rock solid but at least 5 years old now- happy to upgrade this if needed as I can use this one in a work PC.
GTX980

I'm aware that GPU prices are currently terrible so will look at 2nd hand on that if needed (e.g. I was originally looking at just trying to get a2nd hand 080ti £250ish quid as a quick upgrade).

Can you fine folk let me know if there's a way to get a significant upgrade for about £500- e.g. is there a mobo/cpu combo that can use the DDR4 I've already got, paired with a 2nd hand GPU maybe?

What about if the budget was £800- I'd definitely want that to include a petty significant GPU and CPU upgrade over what I have, but don't expect it to be top of the range.

Or is there basically no hope of a decent upgrade for less than a grand?!

Many thanks!

Intel Core i5-13600K (Raptor Lake) Socket LGA1700 Processor - Retail - £319.99
Asrock Z790 PG Lightning/D4 (LGA 1700) DDR4 ATX Motherboard - £209.99
Sapphire Radeon RX 6600 Pulse Gaming 8GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £259.99

Grand Total: £801.07

RX 6600 is a lot faster than a 980, but 4K? Umm, pushing it and AMD GPU might be a problem for productivity stuff.

I'm not sure what coolers are compatible with your case, but you'd need something pretty decent for a 13600K (at least, outside of gaming).

Gigabyte X570S UD (Socket AM4) DDR4 ATX Motherboard - £159.95
AMD Ryzen 7 5700X Eight Core 4.6GHz (Socket AM4) Processor - Retail - £218.99
Inno3D GeForce RTX 3060Ti Twin X2 LHR 8GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £419.98
Nvidia - Unleash Your Superhero - Marvel's Midnight Suns - £0.00

Grand Total: £809.42

You'd need a cooler for the 5700X too, but a half-decent air cooler is sufficient.

A 3060 Ti is quite a lot faster than a 6600 (it's an entry level 1440p card, whereas the RX 6600 is suited to 1080p), but you'll still need to use upscaling to achieve decent frame rates in newer games at 4K (older & less demanding games it can handle at 4K).

One alternative option, is to mod your Z170 board's BIOS and get a 6 or 8 core 8th/9th gen CPU, like a 8700K/9700K, which would be fine with something like a 6600 or 3060, but they're usually too expensive used to make them viable.
