Hi

My dad is looking at an upgrade in the next few weeks, hes after :

GFX Card
Mobo
CPU
RAM (Hes on XP 32bit, but may soon upgrade his OS, so prolly go for 4 gig if poss)

and spending around £500 (excluding delivery - I can pick the items up from OCUK).

The rig will be used for Photoshop / Photo editing and gaming (BF2 and COD4 mainly).

I was thinking of the new Wolfdale E8400 but then a unsure as to the rest of the kit - any advise (especially on the GFX card) would be appreciated

Cheers

TB

Overclock that Wolf and you'll have some serious processing power for editting. Possibly go for an 8800GTS if you want to spend the full £500 :)

e8400, Tuniq Tower or AF7 Pro, Asus P5K, OCZ 4 x 1GB, 8800 GT.

If that's over budget, then drop the CPU down to something less pricey (e.g. e2200). As long as you clock whatever you get up to 3GHz it won't limit the system (much).

spec's look fine, only concern may be that the mobos work out the box with the wolfdale processors.

maybe better getting a 6750, unless you're happy to do a bios flash when you get the gear.

Well, I know Photoshop really likes extra cores, so maybe a q6600 worth considering?

How much gaming does he do, and what kinds of games?

Thanks for the replies so far

I have a spare AC7 Pro I can let him have, so a cooler isnt really a consideration as he wont be OCing.

I dont think, form personal experience, that the Q6600 offers any real advantage at the moment and runs at lava like temps :P

Ill have to look at the mobo support for the Wolfdale

And he prolly does about 50 / 50 PS / Gaming (mostly FPS)

He will be running at 1680x1050 Resolution on a 22" wide screen inch monitor (should have said - sorry) - so any thoughts on the GTS over the GT ??

Thanks again

TB :)
