I am thinking of upgrading my pc and would value your opinions please.

I’m not a gamer but I do a lot of Photoshop/media type work and often have several large projects open at once so. Which processor would you advise and which motherboard. I have listed what I believe will do the job but I’m not expert enough so value your thoughts please?

Intel Core i7 870 2.93Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail at £227.99
Intel Core i7-2600 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail at £235.99
Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail at £219.99

Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard at £154.99
Asus X58 Sabertooth TUF Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard at £144.98

The 2600 without question combined with a P67 motherboard.

This is the reason why - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/287?vs=100

You wont need the K cpu, it only offers a unlocked multiplier and a slightly better onboard gpu.

Might like that

Is the Intel Core i7-2600 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) faster than the Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) then? Its so confusing lol

Out of interest why the MSI board and not a Asus for example?

Thanks

The Asus P8P67 Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) no good then? I have never had an MSI board are they reliable and easy to set up? Im a bit dimm if things get too technical lol.

Thanks again

The ASUS is fine, added a link in my post to the performance difference.

remember some of the graphs is "lower is better"

Just checked the link out thank you. Figures for the i7-2600 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) look much better so thats made my mind up on CPU. Just worried about this Sandybridge issue mentioned on OC.

It only affects five of the sata2.0 ports, the asus board has lots of sata3.0 you can use without trouble.

Also less than 5% chance of being affected.

Thank you for all your help and advice.

You kind folks provide an invaluable service to those of us with shall we say less technical ability and that is very much appreciated. Thanks once again:)
