Upgrade advice (original title!)

Right. So all of the parts arrived this week and I am ready to build. An easy question first though.

Once I have built the new machine, will I be able to plus on my old HD from the existing machine and just move files across? Like could I back up my Steam games and then just drag them over to the new HD? My music and videos and stuff? Would it really be as simple as just plug in my old hd drive and dragging the files across?

This link shows you how to move Steam to a different hard drive.

I assume you are going to be doing a fresh install of Windows on your new pc ? If so then just make sure that only the SSD is connected, and that AHCI mode is enabled in the BIOS. When you have installed windows then you can connect your mechanical hard drives.

Then you can copy/paste or drag files from your old HDD to the new mechanical drive.

No need to move the Steam folder on your hdd. Just re-install Steam on your ssd, along with a few games that you play atm. Then just link your old Steam folder as d/load destination for the rest of your games. That's all I ever do.

So far so good. The build has gone well. Windows has installed. Ssd drive is shockingly fast, but windows isn't spotting my 1TB HD.

Any ideas?

Is this the new 1TB hard drive ? If so then you will have to format it first.

For Windows 7 right click on 'my computer' then select 'manage'. Then click on 'disk management' and find your new drive. Then you need to format it by right clicking on it.

Another question. I on the HDD that I pulled from my old machine can I just delete all the for the windows folders and the such?

Obviously my windows now operates from the SSD so on the old HDD its just taking up space.
