Hi everyone,

I used to be a keen PC gamer, but since working longer hours etc etc things have slipped somewhat on the PC front.

My system at present is a -

Q6600 @ factory settings
A Gigabyte mobo - Not sure on which, but was decent at the time
4 gig ram - Corsair I believe
Cosair 650w psu
MSI 7850 Twin Forzr 3 2gb

My Current GPU - Will this still cut it if I upgrade the CPU, Mobo and Ram?

Now I am not fussed on overclocking, all I want is a more up to date system that will play Total War Rome 2, BF4, the new F1 all at decent levels of detail. Now I will be playing this from my lounge on a HD (1080P) TV as I need to move the PC from bedroom.

I dont want out and out top end performance as I can't afford the top end of the scale - So my budget is around £250-£300 for the upgrade.

So my view - are the socket 1155's still worth going for?
Which would be best i3 or i5? If so the 3220 or 3240 for the i3's. Or is worth the extra 40 quid for the i5 - 3330? Or should I be going for the 1150 socket?

Also another concern is the level of noise - The case I am keeping is a Corsair Carbide 500 I believe. Its the one with bulges. Will this keep everything cool enough if I buy some decent low noise fans?

Sorry and one more thing is what CPU cooler should I get to keep the temp and noise down.

I look forward to peoples advice.

Thanks,

Ed

Thank you for your speedy response.

Are the AMD's still any good? I remember years ago when they were ace and I think i had a AMD2400 or something - Used to uber back then.

But I remembered when I did my last upgrade (the Q6600) they were somewhat behind the speeds of the Intels.

Thank again.

AMD are good in the low range, especially when you can get a 4/6 core CPU for the same price as a i3 (2 cores but with HT) and with games getting more complex and using more threads they compete well again.

Throw in a ssd to stulids last spec as/when you can afford it and you've got yourself a decent budget system, the z87 mobo gives you an option of upgrading to a 4670k/4770k(or whatever die shrink version Intel brings out in a year or so time) in the future.

£300 should be able to net you a decent IvyBridge bundle second-hand if you're not adverse to that kind of thing.

I am liking the AMD route of the 8320. It looks very fast for the price.

Is the mobo good? I can't seem to find any reviews on it?

Also will I have to flash the BIOS so it will see the CPU?

Thanks for all your help btw guys and girls. I hate not knowing anything anymore - Probably 2/3 years ago now since I properly played with a gaming PC.

Thanks

Ed

Also will I have to flash the BIOS so it will see the CPU?

that is the £1,000,000 question now day's, it all depends on the motherboard batch OcUK have

Just had a look on the gig website and the cpu as been supported from bios F1 so it will 100% work out of the box

Thanks dude.

Ok, so.....major discovery for me. This is how long since I last opened my case to check everything.

I actually have a MSI 6950 Twin Frozr 3!!! Is this going to be a big problem?

Thank you for that link! That has made me happier. Well if upgrade brings me back into PC gaming, then I am sure it wont be long and I will be buying a 7950 or something up there.

Thank you again for all of your advice.

Oh and one last thing.....there isn't anything stopping me from putting my Apache Black fans onto the H80 for quieter results?

Thanks again.
