Hi all,

Hope you guys are all okay - looking for some friendly advice and hopefully you can point me in the right direction.

For the last 10-15 years I've bought my PCs from Overclockers, never had any real issues, and found the service and support excellent. I used to upgrade every 2-3 years when I had the money, but have more recently been a bit low on cash. My last PC (the one I'm typing from now) was an OC purchase back in 2017, and obviously it's starting to struggle with the latest games. I always buy complete rigs and not components and then upgrade myself, as I'm not that amazing with it. I have previously upgraded PC components (RAM, graphics cards etc) but never built my own rig from scratch.

My thoughts are, do I splash out big cash for whole rig again that will last me another 5+ years as this one has done, or do I go for components and risk that I can upgrade this machine myself and not blow it to pieces? Also, is it possible that with the right components this rig is upgradeable enough, or is a totally new rig actually the sensible way to go?

2017rig.jpg

This is my list of components from the current rig, which I'm sure may make some of you wince.

All advice gratefully received, please.

I think if it was a case of say just replacing the graphics card and some RAM, I ought to be able to manage that - anything involving changing processor, mobo or the like is likely to mean I shoot myself.

So I guess the next question is, what rigs would you guys recommend for around the grand mark, which might last me a few years for the current and gaming greats? I'll then need to think on what to do with this old beast...

Many thanks.

H

The simple upgrad would just be a faster gpu with more ram like a 6600/6700xt or 3060/ti/3070. I feel thats whats holding your rig back the most.

Changing the ram wont make any real difference.

Yes a full upgrade would bring extra performance but you could get away wittout depending upon what games and reslolution you play at.

Swapping the 1050 for a 6600 (£230-£250) would be my suggestion and it's one of the easiest upgrades to make. It does depend what games you're playing and what settings/resolution.

As a FYI (as you arent sure about self-biuild) for under your budget while reusing your case, ram, cooler, psu and hard drives (although I have added a nvme drive to speed up game/program loading).

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £759.88 (includes delivery: £0.00)

That gtx 1050 gpu will be the biggest thing holding the system back, so imo you should upgrade that first (maybe add a second ssd to install newer games on rather than the hard disk too). Should boost performance a lot, and you might be happy with the preformance of the rest of the system for another few years.

Presume you have a 1080p monitor?

On the nvidia side an RTX 3060 12gb for £330 might be a good upgrade: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...ddr6-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-1fh-gi.html

Or the more powerful 3060Ti for about another £100.

On the AMD side (would be worth running DDU to help get a clean transfer from Nvidia to AMD without driver issues -
)
An RX 6600 for £250: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/sapp...ddr6-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-39r-sp.html
Or rx 6650xt for £310: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...ddr6-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-38y-ms.html

The AMD options are better value atm, so that's what I'd buy personally.

As people have suggested, and your motherbaord supports it, is a NVME SSD upgrade, probably 1TB so you can get some games on it as well as your OS and then a graphics card upgrade. Good suggestions given above already so I don’t need to repeat what they’ve said. Then tbh I’d save for a bigger upgrade in 2024 as there’s plenty of life left in what you have with some choice upgrades.

These are all brilliant ideas and suggestions, thank you, I'm really grateful.

The games I'm currently playing are Assassins Creed Valhalla (runs pretty well but stalls a little from time to time), WH40K Darktide (runs about as smooth as a PowerPoint presentation, stutters like crazy and the game says I don't have even the minimum requirements), Sniper 5 (runs really well on medium to high), Red Dead Redemption 2 (I have to lower the resolution to even get it to consider running) and Cyberpunk 2077 (runs really well with medium settings, looks amazing but is definitely lagging).

It's your gpu that doesn't meet the requirements in warhammer and should be changed first.

Rx 6600 at around £230 is a monster upgrade over you 1050

Hiya, me again - due to various complications and other Real World (TM) reasons I haven't upgraded yet, but it's becoming more of an issue now as my secondary HD is failing.

I'm going to go full rig, and if you guys are happy to ping advice to me again I'd be grateful, please.

I'm going to go to £1500-£1800 I think as I reckon this will be my new rig for around 8-10 years so will hopefully be good enough. Gaming wise I'm after something that will handle Starfield, Darktide, Baldurs Gate 3, the new Elder Scrolls/GTA/Space Marine games when they come out, etc.

I will want two HDs again, I think, so a primary for system/apps and a secondary for games, storage, photos etc. Unless you guys tell me that's insane. Currently I have a SSD for OS and a secondary old school HD for everything else (2TB).

On top of that, what's my quickest and easiest route to getting all the gumph from my HD across to the new machine? Shoving my old HD in as a third drive and copying it across, or some kind of caddy system? Apologies for the noob questions.

All advice gratefully received, as ever.

Something like this would fit the bill:

If you gave OCUK a ring and provided the above information they would build it for you for a fee, you could consider spending more upgrading to a 7800X3D CPU but the 7600 should be ample. Windows is not included in this build, but it's super easy to install yourself and does most of the work for you, all you need is a USB stick. I'd double check that the case I linked will fit that graphics card, but if OCUK are building it for you they'll be able to say for sure anyway.

I've gone a step down in GPU was th the 780xt but have put in the 7800x3d one of the fastest gaming chips.

Put windows in there and also 2 X m2 drives , 1tb for windows and apps and 2tb for games, etc

Overclockers probably charge £100 to £150 to build to take you to £1800.

Interesting question...the prebuild does not seen to include the two Starfield codes that should te4chnically be part of the package. Do you imagine they are not given over to subsidise costs or are included but unintentionally left out?
