Hey Guys/Gals,

After a little advice on what I could invest in to make my current rig, both better and hopefully a little more future proof so it won't cost me a bomb to upgrade in the future...

I'm not really up to speed with current technologies, i.e. X2 processors so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Current Rig Spec:

In Sig, but it's a little small so:-

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego
Asus A8N-SLi Premium PCI-E - Mobo
WD Caviar SE 200GB
Lian-Li PC-7 - Case
Hiper Modular 580 -PSU
2GB Corsair XMS3200 CAS2
Leadtek GeForce 6800 GT 256MB PCI-E

Cheers.

Future proof will be very hard to gain from that spec seeing as 939 is dead. You'll have to buy a new mobo, RAM and CPU.

What sort of stuff do you use your PC for?

Ah right,

Well at the moment I use to to play a few games, Settlers, CSS, DAoC. Hopefully WAROnline when that's released next year too.

Apart from gaming and the odd bash in Photoshop, not much more.

I don't mind having to save a little to get a few bits if it's all bad news for me, but still all help appreciated.

Cheers.

Replace that aging 6800GT with an X1800XT, they are even cheaper now on this week only! That should make your system last quite a bit longer, if you havn't already you should overclock that cpu a bit.

Ah ok that sounds like a good idea. I was contemplating attempting to overclock the rig, but I was a little worried I would do something wrong hehe.

Yep the only thing you can do is upgrade your 3Dcard or upgrade the lot and go conroe.

I'd stick with 939 for the time being, maybe take this chance to get dual core aswell?

For example then, if I were to buy the X1800XT and a...,

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ (Socket 939) - Retail

Would that be as easy as it slotting right in, or am I getting a little confused?

Cheers.

Well that sounds easy enough then, I will also print off the overclocking guide and see how ambitious I am feeling later this evening hehe.

Thanks for the help.

Hey guys,

Got myself about £300 to upgrade my rig a little, as discussed in this topic I was going to stump for:

1) Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £135 Or maybe a X1900 on T.W.O.

Or did you guys mean the 512MB option?

2) AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ (Socket 939) - Retail - £158

Would that be the best idea for an upgrade for myself, baring in mind I'm going to hopefully be playing a few machine heaver MMO's come christmas.

Cheers.

You can still get a great 939 system , i would not say 939 is dead yet, this time next year something else will be out , i would say single core is pretty much out , i still have my FX57 939 and it still works for me
