Hey guys,

well it has been over 2 years since my last cpu/mobo/ram upgrade and i was wondering if there is any point in upgrading my system now or not.

Running an i7 950 @ 3.2 Ghz these days (some problem with cooling so not 4Ghz)

12 Gb of 1600 MHz ram

7970 gpu

Asus P6X58D-E mobo.

I guess i could upgrade my HDDs to SSDs.

gaming wise, i have yet to really see something that makes my system struggle. The latest game i played was Tomb raider, and it ran maxed out with no problems.

In terms of CPUs, i am interested in trying an AMD variant in my next upgrade cycle, anybody know which processor would be an upgrade from i7950?

Any suggestions? :D

Thanks.

Intel's launching Haswell in less than 2 months.
I honestly couldn't recommend an AMD over an i7 920.
Your i7 at 4GHZ is going to game the same as a 4.8GHZ FX8350 and isn't going to be much slower in higher threaded apps.

I'd wait for the 4770K, or go for a 3930K, as I wouldn't consider an i7 3820 worth it either.

Really need a budget though.

Thanks, i was thinking pretty much on the lines. Budget i would say would be best bang for the buck. I usually upgrade with overclocking in mind so anything that can get me a worthy upgrade really. In the past i have spent around £500 on just cpu motherboard and ram.

I'd wait an extra 2 months for Haswell if you can, we don't know how it'll clock at the moment, but hopefully better than Ivy.
The IPC of Ivy is unchallenged at the moment, however the IHS isn't soldered on which has led to them not overclocking quite as well as people would have first hoped.

Or, go all out on a 3930k and an X79 board.

"gaming wise, i have yet to really see something that makes my system struggle." Answered your own question really :)

In the mean time, you could de-dust your CPU heatsink and reapply thermal paste. That should help your temps.

+1 agreed!!! Keep the 950, some guys are still rolling on Q6's in here(:D). If you have a decent chip already keep it and save your money. If youre bored, crack out the paste and see what happens!

I'd try and fix the cooling problems and push to ~4Ghz, then wait for Haswell to arrive. Either way I wouldn't be in a rush to do anything right now, i7 9XX are still strong gaming chips.
