I currently have an i5 [email protected] with a Gigabyte Z97X-SLI (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard. I am thinking of upgrading but wondering if it is worth waiting for Skylake. I am seeing games stating that the minimum requirements are an i7 and am worried that my system will not be able to keep up soon. I use it for gaming alone and just want to run games as high as possible at 1440 144hz. I have 1 gtx 980 at the minute and am going sli so will be upgrading power supply and a few other bits so am tempted to upgrade everything now. I was thinking about the x99s and the 5820k. I would just like to try and future proof as much as possible but don't want to waste money if not needed.

Any help appreciated.

Hi and welcome.

Keep what you have with that CPU+board.

List everything you have from mouse to speakers and maybe something else can be suggested.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Would you say there is no point changing that CPU and board just for gaming purposes at all? Would this last me for some time?

Sorry but I am not very tech minded shall we say lol.

The money I could save could certainly go towards a new monitor, I was looking at the Asus PG278Q ROG Swift 27" G-Sync 144Hz Gaming Widescreen LED Slim Bezel Monitor - Black/Red. Unless you could recommend anything else.

Thanks again.

That CPU will last for ages.

Skylake will be the usual small <10% improvement I reckon just like Sandybridge to Ivybridge was and Ivbridge to Haswell was.

The ROG swift is a very nice monitor and you have a decent GFX card to run its native 1440P resolution, you may find you do not even need a 2nd card as Gsync will helps loads.

I guess a budget would help.

Ahhh so this ddr4 doesn't really change much either then as that's what I was thinking with the x99.

My budget is £1500. That needs to include -
1000w superflower psu (I have the 750 gold green atm)
I was looking at the corsair hydro h100i gtx but they are out of stock.(I have the prolimatech atm)
Also I am wanting an extra ssd Samsung 250gb 850 EVo I was thinking.

I was informed that the 750w power supply would not be sufficient for sli but I would like your advice on that if possible.

Thanks again.

If you do not have a SSD, get one, great upgrade and well worth £90.

Then a Gsync monitor (Swift or Acer).

Then see what you think of those two items and if you are not satified then look at other options.

What monitor do you have now?

The monitor is an Iiyama Prolite 24" 1080p 60Hz so the upgrade is due.

I noticed there has been problems with that Corsair cooler also and that they have been recalled. Are they decent\/

The H110i GT first batch was apparently subjected to minus zero etc temps (transport or storage or something) so became faulty and so some leaked.

Corsair recalled those.

Many including mine were fine, you could tell if it was faulty as liquid was already in the plastic bag it came in, if yours (like mine was) was bone dry then it was fine to use.

The H100i GTX I dont know about, its been in and out of stock so maybe is just popular.

What keyboard/mouse+speakers do you have? maybe something can be upgraded there.

My mouse and keyboard are just the basic coolermaster bundle I received with my pc. Speakers are very basic also I cant even remember the name lol. All very basic to be honest. Would be happy with some suggestions.

Thanks.

I have on the list already taking into account I have £1500 - £1600 max to spend -

MSI GeForce GTX 980 Gaming Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 1000W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black
Corsair Hydro H100i GTX 240mm High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (CW-9060021-WW)
Samsung 250GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E250B/EU)

Now monitors there are two I am torn between -

Acer Predator XB270HU 27" G-Sync IPS 144Hz Gaming Widescreen LED Monitor - Black/Red (UM.HB0EE.009)
Asus PG278Q ROG Swift 27" G-Sync 144Hz Gaming Widescreen LED Slim Bezel Monitor - Black/Red

Thanks.

The Acer is IPS so its colours/contrast/blacks are going to be superior to the swift.

But if you have been using an old monitor then the swift will still knock your socks off and if you haven't seen an IPS screen before then you wont know the what you missing anyway.

IPS panels have a certain "glow" "shine" to them (its a side effect of IPS and I think all have it) that some people hate or do not care about.

Yes I have seen some reviews and the IPS panel seems to have a lot more going for it but the response time is a little worse than the swift.

Would you say I needed a new power supply for sli? I have a 750w superflower atm. Is a 1000w a must?

Thank you.

Ive always specced 850w for GTX980 in SLI with a Z97 system

Your PSU will work but ideally do not want to run a PSU close to its limits constantly. They also have a "sweet spot" where they are most efficient.

Yes I don't want to risk it so I will upgrade that.

I have been able to fit everything into my budget apart from the speakers. The mouse is on pre order so will have to wait for that unless there is another for the same price you could recommend? I have decided to go with the swift as I think it will be a massive step up from what I am using and I have never used the ips panel so will not know the difference.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

The EC1-A and EC2-A are instock (same mice just a slight size difference), its just that the FK1+FK2 come with a free comade which helps with the cable.

Ok great.

And there is absolutely no benefit in upgrading to the i7 4790k for gaming at all?

Just with the likes of the Witcher 3 stating the minimum requirements for decent settings is an i7. I would hate to think within the year I need to upgrade anyway from my i5 4690k.

Thank you.

Try the game before anything, you also have an overclock making up for it.

the games isnt even out out so it might run just fine.
