Hello all just trying to help a friend upgrade his graphics card for him. He is wanting to play battlefield 1. Not sure what he currently has but his motherboard is a GA-990FXA-UD3 with a 850 watt power supply.

He is looking to spend between £300-400. Games at standard 1080 resolution.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers!

You could spent a fair bit less and still play Battlefield 1 maxed out. An RX 480 or GTX 1060 around the £250 mark would get the job done comfortably. He obviously has an AMD CPU, so that's going to hold a 1070 back a fair bit anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have found out that he currently has a MSI HD 7950 3072mb GDDR5 and his CPU is an AMD FX-6 6300 Black Edition 3.5 ghz.

Cheers

I would advise him to upgrade the cpu first before adding a new card; he's probably already losing some performance in games due to the 7950 being held back.

What power supply is it, e.g. Corsair, Antec, Coolermaster?

Well, I can see two schools of thought here:

1) Wait for the next release of Intel/AMD cpus which I think are due quite soon (few months for Intel anyway, iirc).

2) Buy now. The following is just an example; there are plenty more experienced folk on here than I, so all I've done is selected good bang for buck components.

This is very similar (mobo + cpu) to what I've bought over the last few weeks. Very pleased with it. :)

Some may recommend shelling out a little more on slightly higher frequency memory like 2400mhz + (which is what I bought).

Is he just gaming, or will he be doing video editing / rendering?

With a AMD FX-6 6300 I would get a 470(yes it will bottle neck but at least it is only 179 and not 600+) to tide him over or he will end up spending a lot of money up grading a motherboard and cpu and ram as well.

I agree with this.

RX 470 at maximum for an FX6300. Just too much bottlenecking otherwise.

And then they should plan for a major upgrade to Intel Kaby Lake or AMD Zen once they're available in a couple of months.

An FX6300 + RX 470 will still be ok for 1080p gaming, but going forward a full upgrade will be needed.
