I got a mint condition alienware M17X R4 a while back for £500...

Its an I7 with 12gb ram and a GTX660M... 1080p etc.. lovely laptop but i need more graphical power. Now you can upgrade them with higher power cards but they are expensive and you have to flash the BIOS to an unlocked version ( which can be dicy apparrently ) and even then if you want the 970 or 980 there can be issues.

I have a 500GB mSSD i fitted myself as the boot drive but dell in their infinate wisdom made the msata interface only SATA2 speeds.... 250mb/s but still very snappy. I have 2x 700gb mechanicals in raid for games.

Has anyone here attempted a GPU upgrade on this model? The senisble part of me says to flog it ( i could get £500 for it as i work at a shop that buys and sells electricals ) and get something more up to date.

A new laptop would have M.2 ssd slots and be of course a new generation I7. My budget would be about 1500quid, so probably a 970 rather than a 980.

Any opinons or thoughts would be appreciated.

Sell it, it's rarely worth pouring any real money into upgrading a laptop other than RAM and storage.

+1 to Above. Sell it now whilst you can break even on it (might even be able to get a bit more if you've looked after it).

Not sure what to upgrade it to though...!

Just shy 500 will get you an 980m upgrade kit.

However I recently purchased an alienware 2015 R17 for £1100 from a seller on eBay that has a 4710hq, 16gb ram and a GTX980m

Thanks for the replies guys.

I have found a buyer willing to pay £600 ( too much spending of daddies credit card lol ) and she will have it soon.

I am going to wait and see if there is anything new and buy something around december. By then i can easily spend 1500+ on something :p
