My old faithful of many years failed today, Capacitor failed on motherboard, was damp and a build-up of fluff and dog hair tipped her over the edge. Built it many years ago, hence I can’t find my old login details.

Old specs

P5K-E/wifi-AP
Q6600, and cooler, overclocked
4x Geil 1Gb PC2-6400
Hd4870
Hiper 630w
Vertex 2 ssd 60gb
1tb hdd
Antec 900 case

I used to play BF3 and eve (Good old days) but then this build dated and BF4 would not run, lost interest in it and too tight to buy new components. But the time has come to replace it I think, or keep being tight and buy a 2nd hand P5K.
So, keeping the case, ssd, hdd and hopefully power supply, what spec on a budget can I get to play BF4 and future proof it for the next gen game? Also going to be hooked up to hifi and probably TV to run iplayer, sky go etc in workshop.
Overclock, maybe, but I’m a good few years behind on reading up on it.

Thanks in advance,
Regards Pete

Hello and welcome, I would personally look at updating the PSU as well, you have not mentioned a budget so have come up with the below :)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £199.99
1 x Gigabyte Radeon R9 280 WindForce 3X OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £155.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £61.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £59.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLRED38G2400HC11CDC01) £53.99
Total : £541.55 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Looks good thanks, very tempting.

What does the devils canyon bring over the lower i5's?

Safe guarding the system with a new power supply but would 550w be enough to cover the supply, if later added a cpu cooler into the mix?

yes 550w is enough, i have a 6350 and r9 280 on my xfx 550w and no problems...

that i5 is the K version, so clock the **** out of it xD.. worth the extra money

The stock item is poor.

£15-20 can get a rajintek cooler.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Raijintek Themis Black Heatpipe CPU Cooler PWM - 120mm £19.99
1 x Raijintek Aidos Direct Contact CPU Cooler - Black £14.99
Total : £45.48 (includes shipping : £8.75).

This 280 comes with some free games - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-347-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1842

Or bgrade - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BG-370-MS

Also your SSD will not work with a Z97 board as it has an older sandforce controller.

Coolers have come down in size! They both look ace, and free games are always good!

So will the ssd work withany suitable motherboards?

If not, are the ocz still the way to go??

You need a Z97 board for the 4690K (to overclock).

Early Sandforce controllers do not work with Z87 or 97 boards.

These are the SSDs to buy now,

YOUR BASKET
1 x Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter (CT256MX100SSD1) £86.99
1 x SK Hynix 128GB SSD SH910A SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (HFS128G32MNB-2201A) £49.99
Total : £145.68 (includes shipping : £7.25).

Both in stock.

OCZ use to have some bad reputation awhile back and some unreliable models, they were bought by Toshiba and ever since have been fine, just expensive when compared to the above.

The RAM is currently £49.99 till tomorrow.

There was an Antec 550W PSU at £55, but its out of stock, that would have been suitable to.
