Upgrade celeron to q6600

Sorry Mick yeah for everyone the motherboard is a foxconn G31MX series .775 socket
Currently holding a wolfdale E3330 celeron. Motherboard chipset in CPUZ says P35/G33/G31
Im assuming all 775 socket motherboards will hold a quad ?

No not all 775 boards support a quad.

Its mainly reliant on the chipset rather than it physically fitting in the socket.
But you should be OK with your G31. Although it would be a good idea to check compatibility with the manufacturer site.

Cheers been trying to work out how to past that to here but givin up for now.
Motherboard details as in cpuz are as follows (no seriel number though)
Foxconn G31MX series.
Chipset Intel P35/G33/G31
Southbridge Intel 82801GB (ICH7/R)
LPCIO ITE IT8718

IMHO the q6600 will be overkill, get your self a high clocked core2duo. To put it into perspective my e5300 dual core was ultra snappy in windows whilst having tens of web tabs open with music playing and streaming video at the same time. That was without overclocking and barley touched the power avalible from the cpu.

I have a mild overclock now and play SC2 / Blackops / Crysis2 on highest settings at 40 - 60+fps (1920x1080) no lag. My GFX card is a 5850 which shows that these games really do not need a quad core, just a decent ammount of GHz and a fast graphics card.

I was considering a Q6600 myself but unless i was video encoding or something of that nature as stated above, it would be pointless for me to "upgrade" and could even be detrimental in some games that dont use the extra cores.

Save your self some cash and bang one of these in, plus they run pretty damn cool compared to th q6600 with a much smaller power envelope. Seen them floating about for around £30.

Have fun

Thanks everyone you all being great help and lead me thinking over all me options.
To KelDG Yeah its also a good option, It has been mentioned that a good core 2 will do the job, If I come across a second hand one for the price you mentioned it will be tempting if one comes up.

From your situation I can see its hardly worth the trouble of the upgrade to a Q6600.
Its similar to the situation with me sons i5. Shall I bother to upgrade it to i7, Answer in my case NO , not with the i7 version compatible to his existing motherboard.

Yeah in a way 99.9% of the time overkill, but my upgrade is a much bigger jump either way, depending on what is on offer the price may only be 20-30 difference.
Guess its gona come down to whats available at the time ect. cheers

The only reason I put a q6600 in was I was encoding a bunch of VHS to DVD although I'm sure it helped in BFBC2 more ram is what I really need as the SB jump is a little to costly to 2600k and the 2500k is throwing money away for what I need.

There's absolutely no reason to change the ram you already have plenty at 4gb unless your daughters going to be running vms or rendering 3D or working in RAW media then it'll make no difference.

Nobody said there was a reason, yes he has enough RAM for games etc, I/we said to gain maximum performance from the C2Q he would need to upgrade to PC8500 from PC6400.

It will still work fine with his current RAM though. Same goes for any higher end C2D processors.

The q6600 would be a worthwhile upgrade over the Celeron though but so would almost any of the core 2's.
i only have 2 x 2 gb pc2-6400 (800mhz) ram and i can run games fine

your mobo does support quads,
its a budget board with basic overclocking options, but there are some.

to OP i was in a very similar position to you last year.
i even had the same cpu and similar mobo.
do you realise that the E3300 is a great overclocker? i had mine at 3.4ghz (stock speed is 2.4) on a very similar mobo. is this an option to you?
i eventually did get a Q6600, and as i play a lot of cpu intensive games, BFBC2, CIV 5, Crysis2 etc... i could see the difference straight away.

personaly for the sake of £50-£70 i would get a used Q6600 and overclock it to at least 3.0GHz
then get a decent gpu
imo you should get a couple of years out of them

Sorry been away on chores , Thanks J.col
No TBH never thought of OC Our celeron E3300. though sounds interesting. Thought OC was something for the bigger beasts , though if there is ever a reason to OC this is one.
Ill have to follow a few youtube tutorials and another thread prehaps on here as never gon down this road.
As you say though going down the road of a second hand q6600 , Lasting a couple of years until the main PC is upgraded and the i5 setup can be migrated.

Just for the record won a bid today for £62 for q6600 including fan and postage. So just a big thankyou for everyone who gave me input on this dilemma.
Now for me next issue upgrading me windows but thats for another thread
Thanks again
