Upgrade CPU first or GFX

Hi All,

I have already had a thread open for my decision based around what CPU to go for but now I have a different issue lol!

I will be upgrading CPU/MOBO/RAM/SLI setup - with 2x980ti's

The one think I have decided so far is i'm not going to buy everything at the one time - I will split it up into GFX cards in one go, rest in another

So that leads me to the choice:

  • Buy the CPU/MOBO/RAM/Cooler in October and run that with my two current cards
  • Buy the 980ti's and run it with my current setup

Which would you go for first?

Main reason I am asking is because currently on GTA which I play most of all and I run with settings that max the cards out but leave the CPU around 65/70% over all cores usage. SO would the cards be the better first option or would it cause bottlenecking issues?

Thanks! :)

OK guys thanks.

I think I will be able to do both at the same time or at least the CPU/Mobo/RAM/Cooler/1x980ti as I can sell my current hardware.

Had offers on CPU/Mobo and even if I sell both cards at CEX for the low price of £110 each I can add the rest and get a single ti.

Then in November - second ti, and in December - maybe a 4k xmas present to myself. :P

But if I didn't sell my current stuff, I would have gone for gfx first.

EDIT: Xmas present to myself will be watercooling kit for a custom loop inc gfx and cpu :) I am way too good to myself lol

sell the parts in the members market, you should have access

I do indeed. All parts will go on there for sure, I just meant that if there was no interest I could still sell them for less than what they are worth at CEX and afford what I want :)

I think you will be better off selling the cards to CEX if they are offering £110 each. The last ones in the MM went for less than £100.

What do i have to do to get on your christmas list? :)

I would go for 1 GPU first also.

Something that cant be mentioned on a family forum. lol jokes of course :P

And awesome, reconfirming my thoughts. I am so indecisive when it comes to this stuff. I want it ALL AT ONCE dammit

That's why credit cards were invented. Buy now, swap kit, sell kit, use money to pay off credit card.

Works great until you use the money you get back to buy even more stuff....

Agreed Steve why wait when you might never make it, if you want it buy it now and enjoy it :)

I don't have a credit card at the moment out of choice. About 7 years ago I got myself into bother with one throughout Uni and since then, have cleared all the debt and closed any credit cards I had.

However, I would be fine with one now I think as I'm not a stupid Uni kid anymore but will look into one at another time
