thinking of upgrading one or the other I don't have much of a budget so either the cpu and motherboard (my board wont take an fx chip) or the gpu only.
Currently I am running m4a77td motherboard with 8gig patriot black edition 1333mhz ram, cpu is 955 phenom be @ 3.6g and my gpu is the msi 7850 1g oc edition, windows 8.1 64bit pro.
Which upgrade with give the highest jump in gaming?
Budget is small at no greater than £200

Thanks in advance.

You would be better saving another £50 and getting a i5 4670k with a decent motherboard, that would be about £250, then upgrade the GPU later on.

It would be easier to give you advice if you say what resolution you game at.

EDIT: Second hand might be good for you, but if you want new go with that I guess.

would I need the new ram? was thinking my current ram would be reusable also is the 6300 a good step up from the phenom 955? had been looking at the 8350 also but not sure 8 cores would be an advantage over the 6 on the 6300 in gaming?
Thanks for the helps thus far :)

Would it not be a good idea to reuse your current ram if upgrading CPU and mobo. Would save you £60 for other things and AFAIK ram barely makes any difference for most users tasks.

Yes you can reuse your Memory as I initially fault it was DDR 2.

Look at the 8320 and over clock above and beyond the 8350 and saving £30.

Yes, reuse that RAM. Would this be feasible?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £167.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £68.99
Total : £246.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Then upgrade GPU later on - if not this could work;

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £99.95
1 x Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 AMD 990X (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £79.99
Total : £189.54 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Kind of a waste getting the 'K' CPU and the basic B85 motherboard - no overclocking and not many features compared to Z97 boards.

ok, thanks for the advice I will look into

Thanks all :)

That's not strictly true. When I built the wifes pc using a Gigabyte B85M-D3H I noticed it had loads of overclocking options in the bios. A few weeks ago curiosity got the better of me and I replaced her G3240 with my 4670K and got this:-

That was just a quick overclock just setting the multiplier to 44x and vcore to 1.265v. This board has a full range of options in the bios and a bit of tweaking would probably have gotten me further. I only paid £48 for this board when it was on special elsewhere. It seems to be a bit hit or miss whether it will work though as other's have not had the same result.

I agree that a Z97 board would be the best bet. Not the cheapest available though as that will be little better than a B85 board. One around the £100 mark would be best.
