Hi just a side issue , Iv got a ddr2 foxconn OEM motherboard with limited overclocking to clockgen with no access to voltages in bios .
Its fitted with a q6600 an upgrade from a previous celeron , and a 560ti 2gb gainward GPU .
Would it be worth my trouble upgrading to this ? MSI G41M-P25 Intel G41 (Socket 775) DDR3 microATX Motherboard

For the sake of £37 quid , Iv also got a couple of spare 4GB x 2 10333mhz rams .
Eventualy I will be replacing that with a hand me down i5 750 1156 type pc .
But just to add life , is it worth getting for the sake of that outlay , Can it overclock a q6600 ? have got kuhler 620 to stick on it . Will the extra 8GB make a difference for her gaming ?
Cheers in advance .

Hi there,

How much DDR2 RAM are you currently using?

As for overclocking, I wouldn't think a G41 chipset board would allow you to overclock your quad core CPU much either - they are very low-end boards.

thanks Cmndr andi & blue160 , using 4GB 2x2 ddr2 at moment . It was only temporary, just seemed on paper like a big gain , double the ram , plus an overclock , for such a small outlay .
Is their any other type 775 boards out their which would be worth upgrading too ?
But as you kinda implied on this one its not worth it . cheers

Yea, if you are mainly gaming then jumping for 4GB to 8GB will have little to no difference on performance.

As for upgrading to a better board - there are plenty of decent second-hand boards out there that overclock Q6600 CPUs well - the best being the P45 chipset ones. However the ones that support this CPU and support DDR3 memory are a very different story - since they are in high demand. The prices of these boards (closer to £100) means that it makes more sense to sell the Q6600 and DDR3 and buy an i3 21xx and a s1155 board.

thanks Ill have a look around for that type , but as you say if its that sort of price level , then £100 is not worth when I can put that towards my planned i7 1155 build , Was going to buy this week just gone , but thought ill wait a while see what ivybridge has to offer or at least on reducing prices of 2700 & 2600K types , £9 off a £265 processor is making me rush out in a hurry to make such a hughe saving , So ill thought ill hang on little while longer and see what happens .

Ok, though please bear in mind that Ivy Bridge isn't expected until April and historically the release of a new generation of Intel CPUs doesn't affect the price of the last generation CPUs - they just remain at the previous prices until they run out of stock.

ughhhhh ! I was hoping it would be a little better than £9 especially coming up to release since everyone will be holding off . 20-30 quid perhaps , £9 aint something you notice and rush out to save when your looking at £400 MB and CPU on average say .
