So i'm thinking of upgrading to core2. I want to keep it cheap and then maybe pick up a quad/penryn at a later date (probably a q6600 from the MM) so im thinking;

Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.80GHz
G.Skill 2GB DDR2 HZ PC2-6400C4 (2x1GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit
keep my enermax liberty 500w
keep 8800GT

but im not sure what motherboard would be best? Obviously price is an issue but i'm thinking x38 (more future proof) because they are pci-e 2.0 for the GT or is it not worth the extra and just go for a p35 board ? (having seen the ocuk ip35, looks like a good price)
I intend on clocking the 2140 as much as possible as well

any help appreciated:)

The Abit IP35 range seem quite good, the OcUK IP35 looks to have a decent specification for the price.

I'd still go with a P35 based motherboard I think because by the time you need a PCI-E 2.0 graphics card you will probably also need a whole new set of core components. :)

i guess so yeah, and the ocuk board is pretty cheap compared to the others but i'm going to want to push the 2140 as far i humanly possible, do you think the ocuk board will be able to handle it ?

is there a major difference between the ip35-s and the ip35 pro ? and will the lack of flashy copper heatpipes affect its abilities in anyway ?

The IP35-E doesn't have solid capacitors and is lacking some of the features of the more expensive versions, the IP35 doesn't have the eSATA of the IP35 Pro but has most of the other features.

The OcUK motherboard should be fine, you may want to have a quick check in the motherboard sub-forum for more views though as I think there will be a couple of threads on it at least.

After checking the thread on the ocuk IP35 pro, it seems good but not so good.
Gigabyte P31-DS3L was stated as being on par and its cheaper. Is there a major change between the p31 and p35 chipset ? Still not sure on what to buy..

Calm down people will come to the thread and post eventually.

  • Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
  • Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
  • Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard
