Hi,

Does the upgrade edition still work as a full install for windows?

On software for students it says:
This version of Windows 7 ships as an upgrade edition. It is NOT possible or permitted to perform a clean install with this product.

So is this a bluff or does it still work?

Thanks!

It is possible to do a full install with a regular Upgrade disc, but some of these student offers give you an option of downloading a bastardized installer that seems to confuse most people. If you are given the choice I would order the disc.

Note that to be correctly licensed you need an existing version of Windows to upgrade from.

Yes can do full install of upgrade disc.
Done it when installed SSD, (was not going to install xp just to upgrade to win7)

It is possible to do a clean install using a upgrade version, see link below,

It's just that it said on the site that they updated it to make it so that you can't. I've got a retail copy of Windows 7 Home Premium so could I upgrade from that?

Yes you can do a upgrade with a full copy of Win 7. First i have heard that you can't do a clean install using a upgrade copy of Win 7.

It would be insane if you couldn't, as it would mean you would be completely unable to upgrade from XP!

To my knowledge, the only difference between the normal and upgrade media is that upgrade media checks for a previous OS. Everything else is the same. Which is why Microsoft themselves recommend a double-install of the upgrade edition if you are unable to install the qualifying OS first [missing media for previous OS as an example].

In the [unlikely] event it doesn't work - just use a Retail disc [you can download legal ISOs off the Interwebs] as the key should work.*

*not a guarantee! :p
