Upgrade existing or buy new?

right. All the stuff for the Mac Mini has arrived. I dropped the ram in yesterday as it took 30 seconds, already the machine feels a lot quicker !

Now. The hard drive replacements...

I currently have just the 500GB 5400 RPM drive in the mac mini, and I'm putting in the 250GB SSD and the 2TB HDD to replace it. I've got the parts I need, so now its just down me actually getting on with it.

I have a time capsule that I back up all the data to, is my best option to simply do one last backup, power down the mac mini, take out the drive, put in the two new drives, power on, enter recovery console, and then recover from the time capsule backup ?

I presume if I do this I can chose the drive to recover to (the SSD) and then I can go from there?

I might be being thick, but in theory, if I do that, it will be just as it was before I turned it off, other than being a lot quicker hopefully !!

Bit late I know...

I had exact same MBP as you and upgraded it to 8GB, 512GB SSD even had OSX, Ubuntu and Windows 7 triple booting. It was a lovely machine and did everything I wanted it to do. But I got the upgrade itch and sold it (was immaculate to) and bought a 2012 11" MBA 8GB, 256GB SSD. This was a nice machine but I found I didn't use it as much as the MBP and decided to sell it on before it lost too much value.

I still needed a laptop so ended up buying a Asus Vivobook s200e and added a 256GB SSD which came to a total of £500. It's a nice enough machine but not Apple nice and a pain to use anything other than Windows 8 on it!

In conclusion the 13" MacBook Pro 2010 was the best machine I ever owned and wish I could turn the clock back and still have her. Never got attached to the MBA and the Vivobook doesn't really do it for me but I'll keep it till next year when hopefully I'll replace it with another 13" MacBook Pro.

Still kicking myself now!!!

Just fitted the ssd and new hdd now.

I'd read a guide saying the 2tb drive would fit in 'tightly'

What they actually meant was, with less than a nanometer of space, to the point where you could almost see the unibody shell distort.

Recovery console running and 4 minutes to go downloading the partition. Absolutely died when initial power on was a black screen.... Was on the wrong channel.

MBA will be here in a matter of days now. At last check it had done Shanghai->South Korea->Kazakstan->Germany ... come on UPS !

Mine went after Germany to Castle Donnington (East Mids airport) > Tamworth > Stoke where it's been sat since Saturday morning. It's finally arriving tomorrow, but a bit annoying though because I work down the road from East Mids!! :D
