Upgrade Existing PC

Good Evening Everyone,

I'm currently looking to upgrade my PC to play Rust beyond 60 FPS (i currently play on lowest tier graphics, as the fps goes from 35 to 80 fps max consistently).

My current system Lian-Li Mid Tower case.

Process Ryzen 9 5950x 1-Core Processor, 3041 hmz, 16 Core(s)
ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero
32GB T-Force RAM DDR4 3200
NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3070
1TB SSD 980 Pro
250GB SSD Drive Samsung Evo
Asus CPU Cooler (not sure of make - has 3 fans)
1000W ROG PSU.

I have a £1,000 budget, so welcoming any enchancements to the system. My FPS on Rust etc is 60fps, with games like BF2142 around the same. Just looking for a gaming machine were FPS isn't an issue for games like Rust, Squad, Hunt etc.

My monitor is 244hz - Which I don't need to change, same with mouse and keyboard.

Appreciate any input on the above, good, bad or indifferent. Thank you advance.

Your PC is well above the requirements for Rust. So there's something wrong, assuming you're playing at 1080p. Ordinarily I'd wonder if you weren't playing on the iGPU, but your 5950X doesn't have one.

First things first: is everything up to date? BIOS, Windows Update, Steam, etc. Second, is your GPU in the x16 slot? Third, what are your CPU and GPU temperatures? Are all the fans working?

What do you use the PC for exactly? I ask because you've a very good productivity CPU, but it might not necessarily be the best gaming CPU for Rust.

Rust absolutely loves X3D chips for the extra L3 cache and is very CPU dependent, it's a very weirdly and arguably jankily optimised game. If you only game you could straight swap your 5950X for a 5700X3D or 5800X3D and should see a very healthy difference.

If you do both core count heavy workloads and game you've enough of a budget to move to AM5 with a 9950X3D and should see healthy improvements across the board.

Yes, Windows up to date, downloaded the most recent bios, have drivers automatically update for GPU. CPU temperature is at 55 degrees, that's sitting in league of legends main screen, with windows up at 66w. My GPU temperatue is 49 degrees. idle.

The PC is used for PC gaming only. I have a seperate workstation.

My advise would be to offer a straight swap with someone that has a 5800X3D. You could also sell your 5950 and probably more than cover the costs of a new 5700X3D and there's not much between that and the 5800X3D in reality, whatever is easiest.

As mentioned Rust loves X3D cache from what I've seen, but I would verify this within a Rust-centric community to be 100% before making the shift.

For gaming this would be a very healthy upgrade across the board and not just in Rust, you could reuse everything else. Just make sure you get the 7600X3D and not the regular, Rust needs the extra L3 from the X3D variant chips.

Also measure up the GPU to make sure it fits in your case.

If you only really play Rust, last I checked it doesn't care too much about the GPU and you could simply do the CPU/Mobo/RAM update and see how you get on before pulling the plug on a new GPU.
