Upgrade from 1080TI - It's time!

So it's that time, I asked a few months ago and was told to hold fire and here we are, after AMD announced it's cards I am looking for guidance from the experts on the best upgrade for my rig.

I play games on a 3440 x 1440 monitor, I play a mixture of titles and in fairness the 1080TI still holds up well to this day. However I haven't played any RT games and would like to play Cyberpunk and generally stabilse FPS (play quite a bit of Snowrunner and Warhammer 2/3).

Rest of the rig is as follows:

Asus ROG Maximus XI Hero Intel Z390 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
Intel Core i7-9700K 3.6GHz (Coffee Lake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - OEM - Currently running 5.0ghz on all cores
Team Group Dark T-Force 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz Dual Channel Kit

Whilst I could technically afford a 4090, doesn't mean at least in my view I should jump straight up, I'm also not sure if my CPU will bottleneck anything? Should I look to upgrade this as well?

Can I kindly ask what the recommend suggestions would be for me?

Kind Regards
Lea x

I'm assuming that at your resolution, you will more often than not be GPU-limited so generally speaking, your CPU should be fine.

AMD is quite soon to release their RDNA3 series, though one can keep waiting forever and a day as there's always something on the horizon.

I'm not sure about Snowrunner or Warhammer, but I think Cyberpunk + RT will currently perform best on Nvidia hardware.

I guess it depends on your budget. Also, perhaps let us know what PSU you have.

I don't know when the RTX4080 is due but that might be one to hang on for - depends on how long you have to wait, though.

Failing that, maybe the 3090? I should think enabling RT with Cyberpunk at your res will be demanding.

I'd hang on just a bit longer until RDNA 3 and the RTX 4080 are out, then you can see what happens to the prices of everything. Though, if there's a great black friday deal clearing out old stock, you could jump on one of those...

As said above though, wanting over 100 fps @ max details in native 3440 x 1440 with RT enabled in the most demanding games (like Cyberpunk) is going to be a problem, even with a 3090. If you're willing to turn things down and/or enable DLSS, then you can play around with it, but the 4090 can do things with RT enabled that a 3090 can't. RDNA 3 is supposed to have better ray tracing (than RDNA 2), but I don't think it's going to be good enough, if that's your baseline.

All good points, I suppose I don't mind waiting until we get some 'real' benchmarks for the AMD line up, paying over £1500 on a card just seems crazy to me, I don't mind dialing things down a little I don't have to have max video settings as I honestly can never really see the difference when i'm caught up playing a game.

Would be nice to get an upgrade before xams as I have a month off and would like to get myself a new present for working so damn hard this year! xxx

So I guess I'm looking at a card that would on average give me over 100fps (monitor is 120) - can I kindly ask what the recommend suggestions would be for me?
It will need to be 4090 then, 50% faster than 3090 in CP ... the price makes me wince though. If you could snag a 3080ti for half that cash, still a big improvement on your 1080ti.

What model and manufacturer is your monitor? I also have a 3440x1440p screen but it's an Alienware with G-Sync only which limits me to Nvidia cards. Just in case your screen is similar.

My previous monitor was 3440x1440 with gsync and I had Nv gpu to go with it. I am now using 3440x1440 non g sync monitor and I really cannot tell the difference. I do not play fast fps games and play WH3 like the OP so it is not always necessary, the monitor still works without those types of tech.

I know my eyes are old and I play slower paced games but just because you have a gsync monitor it does not handcuff you to a certain brand. Of course I have seen others show off really bad screen tearing in certain situations but I have never seen thst sort of thing even when I did play faster paced games.

Started writing last night, and others put above now but
if not interested in ray tracing, and def need to see some real reviews, but my money on the 7900xtx for $999, so prob like £1,100 hopefully..saves £700 over a 4090. have to see some reviews of the 4080 18gb also, but reckon they'll come in more expensive. amd 7900xtx and 7900xt releases on 13th dec , so look for reviews around then..4080 16gb release 16th nov I think
other option is try and get a 2nd hand 3090/3090ti...i suggest 800 more posts(literally loads of threads on everything) and then you get access to Members mkt in case you want to try and snag a 3090 from someone desperate for a 4090...that should keep you busy for the next month...just in time for all the reviews ;)

It certainly doesn’t that’s true but for faster paced games or games that run at higher FPS than the refresh rate having VRR helps smooth things out.

Yeah that's a good point that I completely forgot about so thanks! What are peoples thoughts on a 3080TI - I can buy a used card for £800.00 complete with a corsair water block so could plug it right into my water cooled setup?

So I'm back asking - and wow these prices suck hard! My thoughts are to upgrade to a 4070TI - I can't seem to think the 4080 (at least in my case along with the extra expense) is worth it? I need a waterblock as I run custom loop and the cheapest 4080 is the Inno 3D at £1,500. It seems I can get a 4070TI for £800.00 and purchase a waterblock for £150 (total £950) - what are peoples thoughts on this route?

You can pick up a used 3080FE + block for £550, this is the route I'd go down.

Maybe use the 400 quid saving on a 13600k + B660 for a more well rounded system

they're all disappointing value tbh
if you want RT then go nvidia 4070ti - this is approx 3090 performance, can get the 4070ti for msrp
if you want better rasterisation then 7900xt, which is approx 10% faster than the 4070ti (but the 7900xt is also currently above msrp)
