Upgrade from 4890

Buy yourself a game and forget about the hardware for a bit. I command you to download Stalker : complete mod this instant! :D

hahaah - gonna youtube it now - can't remember if I've played STALKER or not.

Problem is (other than source) you just wonder if you're missing something. Like in BC2 for example - couldn't it look much better and perform much better with a nice 6950 or w/e.........

ARGHHHHH

To be honest it's been quite sometime since I noticed a great deal of difference between one gpu's IQ and another. About the only time I do notice anything is when I switch from nvidia to AMD or vice versa. It's much more to do with frame rate, particularly minimum and averages.

I was only joking about Stalker, it's not everones cup of tea...but if you do try it then play it fully patched. If you do decide to keep your card then hang to the money if you can, 2011 looks set to be the best year in PC gaming since 2004 imo.

If you're struggling on anything an alternative would be to pick up a cheap second hand 4890 from MM and Crossfire it.... That would keep you going till the next generation.

I was in the same boat, wanting to spend £200 on upgrading from my 4870 512mb.
I'm very happy with the performance of my HIS 6950.
I've not tried overclocking it yet, no need on 1900 res and my current games such as Black-Ops, Wow, Eve Online and Civ5 etc.
They are supposed to clock up to around 6970 levels too, and I think better drivers will push them harder as well ;)
Get the 6950 and save your cash for more games, another SSD etc :)

What I reckon I should do is stay as I am and wait for some SOC edition with better cooling on either 6950/6970 or 570 and see what the drivers/overclocking performances are like.

I'm not THAt bothered about having to have the brand new tech ie. if I buy just before the new series comes out I won't cry. I practically did that with the 4890 but the £/power was too good to say no to.

Thanks all,

Wu

not tempted by a cheeky msi 5850?

i'm going to that from my 4890 (formerly cfx 4890 - but didn't like the bugs)

i reckon with a bit of a clock i'll be about the same as a 5870 in BC2 and that should be able to last me until 28nm and BF3...

Sell your 4890 for 60 notes (ish) and you're laughing

That is a very cheeky option - I like it.

Thing is, I doubt I would sell my 4890 - not only to keep it as a backup (although I do have an 8800GT) but I just know that I won't be bothered to sell it, posting etc.....

I think I will stave off the itch until a similar card to the MSI comes out for 6950/6970/570 and see what they truly perform like after a few updates and with better cooling and higher overclocks.

well it's only one trip to the post office and selling stuff on here (MM) is usually pretty easy...

or do you have any mates that need an upgrade - even if you get a tenner less - it's worth it i reckon, and that way when your mates are playing BC2 with you they won't be moaning about how **** their pc is!!!

The performance boost i'd say is mainly from going from 512MB to 1GB.

My 6950 is at DPD getting picked up tomorrow, not much of an upgrade from my current card, but as i have sold the 5850 for £120 and got the new card for £200 (on special) its only an £80 upgrade, i seem to do this everytime a new gen comes out and it works out a reasonably cheap upgrade path.

Well French Connection UK it (if you get me)

I went for a HIS 6970 with Christmas discount of 5% (cheers OcUK) it came to £256 - loving it !!

I hope it will fit in my antec 902 and power connections match what is in use on my 4890 with tx 950 or I'll be coming back here for help no doubt !!

ahhahaa

Please don't tell me I should have gone for the 6950 but meh...it's CHRISTMAS !!
