Hi,

I have a few year old set up .. i5 2500k .. 560ti 2gb twin frozr..

it plays cs:go fine at 1920 x 1080 @ 120hz

as i usually upgrade every couple of years, i thought i could go for the:

MSI Radeon R9 280 3gb twin frozr

reviews seem pretty good, and you can get it for 200.. I'm gonna hold off with the rest of my system, just upgrading the graphics/ HD at the moment..

any input is appreciated, cheers

I'm in a similar situation, wanting an upgrade from my 560Ti.

Its between the GTX770 and R9 280X for me. Only thing putting me off AMD is their drivers, as Nvidia drivers have been effortless and completely solid compared to what I remember - and oftenly read.

edit: Roll on someone selling one or better on the MM. ;)

I've never had any major issues with drivers from the red team, so I wouldn't let that worry you needlessly.

What I don't 'buy' is the argument that a 2gb card (GTX770) with a 256 bit bus being a bad choice than compared to, say, a 280X which has 3gb of memory / 384 bit bus, when the benchmarks show them running very closely together.

I think as long as your not running a very high res, then both are as valid option as each other. The processing power, or lack of at some point in the future, will be the main thing that instigates the next upgrade long before the memory / bus come into play. There may be one or two exceptions, like skyrim with a plethora of mods, but I doubt that either is going to give an ideal experience in that situation either (e.g. 60fps / and / or adequate min fps).

@1080p both cards will serve your needs fine
But mostly I came here to debunk a myth.

Both Nvidia and AMD have had and will have again..Terrible drivers
Each and every driver is essentially a guessing game as to what performance you will gain in X title and possibly sacrificing performance in another. Not only that but some drivers have just been junk, either they install bad (for the majority of people) or they go and screw something up.

neither Nvidia or AMD are immune to this.

of course user error counts for a good percentage of the issues either through not running a driver sweep when swapping from green to red/red to green. Or in some cases installing the wrong driver(EG: between 314.22 and 320.x from nvidia there was one released that was actually for laptops released under desktop section.. that caused issues let me tell you!)

So really go by the specs of the card, the cooler and manufacturer you like.
everything else is just faff and not worth considering especially the recent Vram/Bus "issues" people keep bringing up.

Both vendors offer something for everyone's liking, be it mantle or shadowplay for examples.

I personally went with Nvidia because overclockers brought the 670's price down to £200 , the card was sexy compared to the chunky monster AMD was offering. And it was one of the few cards with a backplate. I also like PhysX and shadowplay so it was a win all round for me.
Then I got another 670 for the lols.

The big issue is though...the card with less vram and lower memory bandwidth is actually the more expensive card, not the other way round. If the GTX770 was cheaper than the 280x, then sure...but unfortunately it ain't.

If you've lasted this long then wait another year and get the 20nm / 16nm cards. Unless you want to spend £200-250 on a 2.5 year old GPU.

I have the AX 850..

hmm.. i guess flinco could be right. Ill just bank the money for a whole new set up next year...
Yea that would be the smart thing to do. IMO if you are not playing anything demanding, you might as well save up wait till 20nm/16nm GPU graphic card and CPU upgrade along with DDR4 when they are available...your i5 2500K and 560Ti should last you till then without issue.
