Currently have a 700 watt PSU and only a single 1080p monitor, Ill never have 2 monitors and dont want tp upgrade my psu.

Just want to be able to play games pretty much maxed out for the next year or so.

Thinking a 680....

Remember ive only got a 700watt corsair psu, so two 580's are out the question.

Well as you have mentioned the 680 you don't have an issue budget wise so 7950,7970,680 would all be good options.

7950 is the best buy out of a bad bunch.

If money matters to you and not waving thy willy then it has to be the 7950. Quite simply as it is capable of everything the other two are, it just doesn't carry the number.

See I just think getting a 680 is a bad move. I get the impression its not really that good a card. Crysis 2 for example, reviews suggest 32 fps. Unless thats on mega resolution thats what I get with my current setup on 1080p. I really want a card thatll last me a year or two without struggling. Maybe I should wait?

If you want a single GPU then it's 7970 or 680, those are your options. There is talk of a Nvidia 690 or 780 being released this year but that would still be a good while away.

If you wait a month or so you might see small price drops after Nvidia release their lower 6xx cards but nothing huge and it's more likeley to be the 78xx's that are affected.

A 6950 @ 169.99 can pretty much do it.

680 is overkill for that res and spending 400+ is just not needed.

If he hasn't upgrade yet from a 5870 I'm guessing he wants a card that might last 2-3 years. But if he is only looking for a card for the next few months while waiting for a new card to come out then the 6950 would be a good choice, or just stick with the 5870 as that really shouldn't be struggling to much with games at 1080p.

Sorry guys, one last time. Money is in my account ready to buy but im not set on it. Really dont want to make a bad desicion. The reviews seem to be mixed, people think its not that great, the benchmarks seem to suggest its not that great. Others, like the recent BF3 seem to suggest itll hammer BF3 on ultra 1080p never dropping below about 45fps.

To put my last upgrade in perspective....

Bought the 5870 for ~£280 back on the 13th April, 2010. So this cards done two years for me really and its catered well for me. Until a few weeks ago however I wasnt running a 1080p monitor so the resolution has been slightly lower than Ill want to play now, and its struggling to put out that higher res.

If I buy a GTX 680 will it last me 2 years or so?

Am I making the correct desicion?

I personally think a GTX 680 would be overkill for a single display 1080p, you might be better off going for a GTX570?

Get a 7950 mate, the 680 and 7970 are faaaaar to expensive for what you get. It'll overclock to stock 7970/680 speeds anyways!

You aren't going to get anything faster unless you start looking at dual GPU setups.

Im in a similar boat.

Im waiting on the 670ti as I like the look and the technical features of the new 600 series from Nvidia.

Particulalry adaptive vsync sounds awsome.

So what would you say is the bear minimum card needed to get a smooth experience in BF3 at 1200p?

My current config runs BF3 well enough on auto, which is high everything with ultra textures, and no msaa.

To answer your question " will it last me 2 years or so " then yes it will.
Its arguably the best card currently available , the problem more lies that the new cards have not set the heather on fire the way that many people hoped they would , couple that with the fact that they are not great " value for money " many people have been put off.

To be honest though , in my opinion , and it is only that , my opinion. The newest tech is never about value for money from the makers point of view , its about cashing in on people having the upgrade itch and wanting " the best stuff now " .

If you have the cash it will easily satisfy your needs and be futureproof for at least the length of time you want, if value for money was an issue ( which by the sound of you it isn't ) then you would need to lower your sights ,perhaps to a 7950 and overclock it.

There is no chance that Microsoft will spring a surprise DX12 on us when Windows 8 launches or soon after?

This is the problem with technology. It can get out of date super quick.

In terms of performance the 680 will retain this for at least 2-3 years, but in terms of supporting the latest standards, well it could get out dated tomorrow if Microsoft decided it so.
