Hey guys, I have gotten permission from the better half to buy a new graphics card. I currently have a 7970 and it has been brilliant, but now I would like an upgrade. I will have about £500 to spend and was debating between the 780ti and the R9 290x. The only preference I have is that it will run cooler and quieter than the 7970. Which one shall I get? And which brand would be the best to get? EVEN, MSI etc.
Thanks
Dan

I love it when the wife gives me permission to spend :D

As for a worthy upgrade, the 7970 is still pretty beastly and you will be going for a 780/290 minimum in my opinion.

For Nvidia, I would look to the 780 Classy as they can generally clock higher than my water cooled Titans for benching (just for fun) and that is on air. Cool and quiet card as well.

For AMD, I would look at the Gigabyte R9 290 OC. Great cooler on that.

I was just looking at the GIGABYTE, with the wind force cooler. Would it be better to get a 290x or just a 290? Is it possible to overclock the 290 to 290x performance?

They are so close in performance (290 - 290X) about 5% - 10% max, only you can decide if that extra is worth the extra money.

Given that you mention noise and heat as key criteria, I'd go for the 780Ti. I chose the 780 Ti earlier this year for being quieter than the 290X.

Thanks for the info. It's nearly £100 difference so I'll stick with the 290. Is there a big difference between the 290 and 780?

Now that depends on your preferences.

AMD has things like True Audio/Mantle for BF4 and Thief and nVidia has things like ShadowPlay/PhysX/GameWorks/G-Sync, so if you wanted specific things from that list, again it is price dependent.

I love PhysX and ShadowPlay, so for me I would spend the extra but that is my choice and not for everyone.

Well if that's the case I will stay with Amd. I'll go for the 290. Then I'll have a bit of extra pocket money. Thanks for the help guys. I'll post again in a couple of weeks about the performance.
