So holy mother of god with crazy GPU prices, im thinking my limit is a 2070S or a 5700XT, they seem much of muchness so will it just come down to which drivers i prefer? which would you pick?

System is 2700X on an Asus 470X.

EDIT: See last post, ive had a crazy idea! :D

I have a 1070 and will wait until the 3 series cards are released next year.

Personally I don't think the 2 series cards are worth an upgrade for me.

I play on an UW 3440x1440 monitor and am still pleasantly surprised how well the 1070 copes at that rez.

Gsync helps as well of course.

To be fair ive been so impressed with this 1070, it runs everything i throw at it nicely as i only aim for 60fps, but ive just played Control and its the first game ive had to turn settings down to get a decent framerate, i guess thats part of my 'omg should i upgrade' post.

Either get a 2070S or wait. I would wait for the 3000 series, that is what I am doing.

3070 will be at least 2080 Ti performance and very likely offer better RT performance than a 2080 Ti for less than half what a 2080 Ti costs now. Not only that but new games will start being optimised for the new architecture and Turning will be left behind like Pascal is now with new games.

The choice is pretty limited as im sure you know, if you can, wait till the beggining of next year to see some intel gpus and more navi and 3000 rtx cards.

If not i would recommend the second hand market, especially an evga if nvidia and transfer the warranty or get a 5700 new and flash it to a 5700xt

No much point upgrading now, I guess.
The game mentioned isn't smooth even with the 2080ti, depending on the resolution/quality.
Simply one of does games intended to be more a benchmark than a game, to be honest.

I got a 5700XT Red Devil from an MSI Gaming X 1070. Impressed so far at 1440p, fast, cool and quiet. Seems a decent step up without spending big money.

In the same boat, with an 8GB GPU 90% the performance of an RTX 2060 i'm looking at an RTX 2070S or RX 5700XT minimum for it to be worth the cost, £450 for the 5700XT and £550 for the 2070S...... yeah i'm really not that desperate the 1070 is still mostly good enough at 1440P.

I can wait a bit longer.

It's still definitely worth upgrading this gen. The 2070s absolutely stomps the Zotac Amp Extreme 1070 I had.

Waiting for next gen, is a big issue in the PC community. Buy what you can afford, and enjoy it now.

£400 absolute maximum. Not a penny more, What do you suggest?

If £400 is your maximum I would say aftermarket 5700, or blower 5700 XT......or possibly a 2070....
Personally I would save my cash for a 2070s

Blower coolers are out of the question, my PC makes little noise when gaming and that's how i like it.

RX 5700 isn't bad for £350 but the performance difference is 25%, not worth it.

RTX 2070 +35%, that might just be worth it but they are still £500

I will be buying this for 3 years future proofing so i'm not looking for a 35% upgrade especially when that's at £100 more than the 1070 cost 3 years ago, GPU's are now faster than they were 3 years ago but not by enough and that added performance comes at a 30% higher cost.

There comes a point where you just have to say no, this is getting ridiculous now, i mean the RTX 2080 is as fast as the GTX 1080TI but it also costs the same if not more.

For me its not worth it yet so i'll wait anyway but if they keep jacking the price up while performance stagnates and we keep paying what they charge they will keep jacking the prices up for the same performance.

Depends whether you really need an upgrade right now.

I have a 3440x1440 monitor and there were times a 1080 really struggled with it. I was planning to wait until the next generation came out but my 1080 blew up and had to go for repairs ( will be a month ) so in the mean time I bought a 2070S. I have to say the 2070S is a really worthy upgrade. Given all the negative news about the 20 series I really wasn't expecting much but it is very noticeably more powerful than the 1080. Games like Monster Hunter the 1080 really struggled at 3440x1440, so much so that I often ran it at 2560x1440, and even then to get a constant good framerate I wasn't running it on max settings. But the 2070S makes light work of it. Way more powerful than the 1080. It was running the game at full 3440x1440, max settings, HD texture pack, and not really stressing itself at all. And if you choose to run it with DLSS then its just ridiculous, it barely gets above idle temps. Having said that I certainly would not buy a 20 series for DLSS but it is a handy option for those games that you can't get a decent framerate with.
So I would say that if you really need to upgrade right now then the 2070S is worthy. Certainly way more powerful than a 1070. However, they are expensive so if it's not essential right now then perhaps you would be better waiting for the next generation.

2070 can be found for sub £400, and you'd be looking at at least 40% performance over the 1070. Alternatively there's the 2060 super. Plenty of options for sub £400, all of which give a suitable uplift.

Way I look at that is how many games does he have that he cannot play due to needing an upgrade over a 1070? If the answer can be counted on one hand, then he can just lower settings for those games and wait for new tech which he can get at the start of its life cycle. He will still be able to play the rest of his library of games just fine in the meantime.

I had a Titan XP before selling and downgrading to my 970 and played everything I wanted to play (I don’t play online). Since then there has not been anything that has come out that is a must play game. A couple games I would not mind are coming out between now and the release of 3000 series, but waiting a couple of months is not a big deal as I have plenty other entertainment.

Thanks guys, i think holding off till the next round of cards is probably the best bet, i just hope prices dont go up even more as at the moment its insane.
Even if price was to go up (which I highly doubt by the way), price for performance would improve a lot anyway. Like look now, a 2070S which is better than a 1080 Ti costs £475. Same will happen again. Historically speaking from a price for performance perspective there is a good chance you will get 2080 Ti or there about performance for less than £500 in 6-9 months time. Well worth waiting for that imo.

I agree which is why i think waiting is the clever thing to do, im actually playing a lot of older games at the moment so the 1070 is perfect, just playing Control kind of made me think "oh god its started, my card is finally rubbish AND i have Cyberpunk on the horizon....upgrade!!".

I think RTX3070 or 6700XT next year will be a nice upgrade finally if we dont get price gouged/brexit taxed to death.
