Upgrade from a E6750?

I've got an E6750 @ 3.6Ghz atm and i notice it struggles in games like BC2. I played it on a friends i7 system and its so much smoother in comparison...

Question is, is there a worthwhile cpu upgrade on the 775 socket?

I really cant afford to go i7/i5 as the prices are to high and im not sure if they are worth it.

Im hoping someone can suggest a good 775 sckt Quad cpu? (will this be a noticeable upgrade?)

Is a 6600 good? or a 8*** or 9*** series cpu?

not really sure on the differences tbh.

What you get depends on your budget!

I would look at one of the 6MB or 12mb L2 cache Q9000 series quad cores.

If you can get a cheap Q6600 or Q6700 it should also do the job but single threaded performance at the same clock speed would be the same.

Also looking for a second-hand processor should help reduce the cost.

Ideally I would be looking at spending no more than £140ish on the bay for a second hand one. I just need convincing something like a quad Q9000 series would be a worthwhile upgrade to tide me over for a while.

I'm also unsure what they are really worth. What about a Q9505?

Also what difference does the cache make in game terms?

I’m in exactly the same boat as you with a E6750, but clocked at 3.2Ghz (maybe I should push it higher). Looking at 2nd hand quads but they are all £90+ on the bay. I really want to wait till next year before I up-grade. Just trying to work out if paying £90+ now for a quad is worth it?

BFBC2 is the only thing at the moment that my PC noticeably struggles on

I had an e8500. I kept looking at q9550s etc but they were just too expensive. In the end I just went with i5. the 750 was only £138 then though. All the new stuff cost £421 and I sold the s775 stuff for £255 (both 8gb) so it didn't turn out too bad

The bay prices for q6600s are still pretty high but 90 for a decent clocking chip still isn't too bad if you sell your old one.

Got a q6700 on the auction site for £74 delivered recently. Good 'upgrade' from e8400 as i've only got a p43 board so the extra multiplier on the q6700 helps it oc to the same as the e8400- 3.6ghz easily. Not got any quad optimised games yet so its a bit of a sideways upgrade except for dvd encoding where it kills the dual core. Its effectively a free upgrade as teh e8400 will sell for at least £74. I didn't think it was worth an extra £60 for q9550. Hoping that it will be adequate for another year at least. Keep an eye on auction sites- some bargains if you get in at the right time!

You're pretty lucky if you picked one up for that much, most of them have gone for about 120 recently.

I've been looking for ages- you just need to catch one where the seller isn't great at putting the right info in the listing title. The one I won didn't have q6700 in the title. Also, it's worth looing at the mobo and CPU combo's- saw a decent mobo with an e8600 go for £110 recently. Granted this approach only really works if you're not desperate for the item- can go weeks and weeks with nothing good cropping up. Q9450/q9550 prices are really high second hand- you can an i7 920 new from overclockers for £20-£30 more than Q9550 second hand prices!! Crazy unless you've got an awesome s775 board already
