Hi Chaps,

Looking at the need to upgrade my 290 Tri-X, only managed 60 odd FPS in the BF1 beta, so not overly impressed.

Have a 1440p 144hz freesync monitor. Now, I'm not totally required to have an AMD card because of it, I can live without freesync if its going to get me more FPS for the cash.

Want to spend as little as possible... Well, don't want to get the top end thing possible, as I just can't afford it. Bang for buck. Whats the best thing to get? I could stretch to a 1070 (or at least a 2nd hand one), but is it worth it over say a 480?

Cheers,

Running a 1070 on my xl2730z freesync 1440P 144hz monitor, couldn't be happier. Upgraded from a 390X and don't miss freesync at all, as the 1070 hammers out pretty much double the FPS in many games.

A 480 would be more of a sidestep, as it generally performs on the same level as the 290/290x. It does use a lot less power though, but other than that it isn't an upgrade. A gtx 1070 would be a decent upgrade for sure.

Tbh if you want to stick to AMD then I think you'll have to be patient and wait for Vega (which could be 6+ months away).

Even the Fury wouldn't be much of an upgrade imo, esp due to the low video vRam.

If I was in your shoes then I'd wait and wait for Vega, maybe live with reduced settings for a little bit :) (and it would allow you to save a little more)

The whole purpose of freesync and gsync are to have a smooth experience at their working range. What i cannot get is how you plan to play without freesync and feel you going to have better experience than 60fps with freesync.

I have an xl2730z and replaced the oc nano with the 1080. The only way to have same smooth experience with it without freesync is to make sure the monitor is downclocked to 120hz. Because at least all games do 120hz without vsync on the 1080.

Otherwise if set it to native 144hz, it is better to put the nano back in and play at 60-70fps the same games.

There isn't really a worthwhile AMD upgrade available yet, If you was not looking at an fps counter as you played would the freesynced 60 fps have been a problem?

As mentioned I'd also opt to wait and save up more for Vega, That way you get a solid upgrade with freesync working.

Of course if you can afford a 1070 now and then upgrade to Vega that's also a solid plan.

Freesync monitor owner here (1440p144), gonna upgrade from r9 390 to GTX 1070/1080. Will probably go back to AMD when Vega's out but in the meantime I don't fancy waiting

I went form a 390 to a 1070 using a benq 2730z.

Did miss the freesync at first but the amount of fps the 1070 puts out gives options to get around it or at least make it comfortable.

The 1070 is too good imo. I did have a fury nitro for a couple of days but it was held back by the vram.

If amd brings out a card that can compete with the 1070 then I may change back but the low voltage, high fps output is worth missing out on freesync imo.

I was going to sell my monitor and go gsync but I don't like what's on offer and the prices are not great. So I will hold on to the benq 2730z and see what amd do next.

A problem? No, but 120hrz+ feels so much nicer. I found myself turning the settings all down to low just to get closer to it when playing.

Will wait for Vega then! Worst case, I get a 1070/80 then if its no good. Cheers chaps!

I went with a Fury Nitro, more than happy with the result as I maintain a higher lower FPS in BF4 which was most important for me, my 290X wasnt keeping the FPS high enough at 1440p with too many dips in performance

I'm in the same boat, the I did think about an upgrade 6 months ago from a manually oc'd Sapphire 290, it was a sound investment at the right price nearly two years ago(£200new!) I've also shifted to a 1440p Free sync but Vega is to far away, I have no interest in the Rx 480 or 390 series at the moment either.
I'm about to settle on a XFX Fury as from what I read it's a sweet spot for it at 1440p and £299 is a great price!, My only complication is I have a full custom loop which will add to cost...... /:
Am I doing the right thing?, Im hoping for a modest increase in frames and dont want to switch to Nvidia.

Yes mate, can't wait for Vega.
I'm excited, gonna run my first custom watercooling loop too!

I would say for around £150 cost to upgrade from selling your old card its worth it

Thats how much I paid to upgrade from 290X and there is a definite increase in FPS at 1440p it holds above 60 now where as before I was going lots of drops into the 40s

Thanks for reply, that's encouraging!, Exactly where I'm at at moment!

I don't expect to get a massive increase but cant go another 6 to 12 months waiting for Amd to get their **** together with the fps dips I'm getting....

He'll get about £80-£90 for a 290 in todays market (Think the last 290X went for about £110)

Me? I'd make it last just another few months and see what news turns up regarding Vega (BUT the Fury isn't a bad card tbh)

Get the Fury sod it, life's for living now and their's some good titles coming
