I got an a200 around 2 or so years ago. Initially I went for a relatively cheap(ish) DSLR as I wanted to try things out first to see if I would keep photography as a hobby. SO now that I know its something that I want to contiune with I think its time for a new camera.

The a200 has served me well, but I feel it is starting to show its age a bit. Also the lack of a few features such as DOF preview, live preview on screen etc can sometime be a bit annoying.

Another bugbear is also that the used market for alpha mount lenses isn't really that great, I know there is a lot of old minolta stuff out there but getting your hands on decent used lenses is really hard. Every shop i walk into has canon and Nikon gear falling off the shelves but sony offerings are often light.

Also the propriety hot shoe boils my blood, further increasing frustrations in finding gear !!

I would say I am at an intermdiate stage in my development as a photographer now and am looking for camera that would suit my needs. ANyone got any suggestions on what an appropriate upgrade would be. I would consider fully switching system to canon or nikon as i could likely trade in the gear I already have for a few hundred quid towards the cost of a new camera.

Price wise I am looking around the 500-750 mark if thats possible for a body with a decent lens, if kit lens then price would need to be a bit lower as kit lens i assume would be 18-55 and I would want another lens that can reach to at least 200 or 300 also.

Should be fairly easy to find a Canon 600D with the 18-55mm and 55-250mm IS lenses for around your budget and it ticks all the boxes you've mentioned above.

I have been looking around and I can get an alpha700 with official sony grip for 500 quid. Feature wise I know that it owuld be un upgrade i.e better ISO range, 1/8000 shutter speed, DOF preview.

WOuld it be worth thinking of this as an upgrade. I know its still a sony, but as I alrady have some sony glass and accessroies maybe it would be a worthwhile upgrade or should I really be looking at the newer a55/65 etc range. TBH i am not really taken by the newer models. I was looking for a 580 if I was going to stick with Sony but I can't find them anywhere for love nor money !! :(

The A700 is a great camera and that price doesn't sound too bad to be honest. The grip alone retails at nearly £200 new.

The viewfinder, control, feel and build quality are all a big step up from your A200 as well as high ISO performance and image quality as a whole..

The A580 again is decent enough but it doesn't have a lot of the fine tuning ability in the menu's that A700 has but it does have a superb live view option, tilting LCD and a new AF system. It is also better in low light than the A700.

The viewfinder is tiny however when compared to the A700 due to the 2nd sensor used for live view in the top of the camera.
