Upgrade from an iPhone4

Read his post properly. You'll note he is currently on a 30 day SIM only plan, and is considering moving to a conventional contract with either O2 or Vodafone.

Thats all he's doing - taking a contract phone out, like anyone else does.

SIM only deals are considerably cheaper than deals with 'free' upgrades or 'free' phones. It is not a free phone, it is a mobile phone contract which contains an element of repayment towards the initial cost of the handset.

He already has an iPhone 4, as much as I dislike them there is little reason to move away from his currently ideal situation of having a 30 day rolling contract *and* a top end phone.

I disagree with that, as long as he's paying no more than £15 a month extra and is fine being tied into an 18 month contract then he will profit from going contract rather than sim free.

I was on a £20 a month sim free contract for a few months and just last week upgraded to a £30 (less actually) 18 month contract with the same mins/texts etc. I could have sold the phone and saved myself far more money over just going sim free.

I'm sure if the OP's iPhone 4 was in good condition he could get a contract phone, sell the iPhone and still save money over a sim only deal.

I really dont think it is. You don't get a 12 month contract on £35 a month with a completely free high end handset of your choice unless your bills are considerably more than £35 a month.

I used to administer a corporate account with several hundred handsets and we didnt get that!

No, it is a 24 month contract that you can upgrade after 12 months.

After 12 months you renew for 24 months from that date.

Read it again because its very unlilkely your 'upgrade on a 24 month contract at month 12 when you only pay £35 a month will be a free iPhone 4 or similar value handset.

Businesses can get good deals but not with such a low monthly spend!

I have had a business account for about 5 years with O2 and I have had an upgrade every 12 months. I might not get an iPhone for free but I can certainly get another smartphone for free (or very close to free)

And really - I just wanted some feedback on a new handset to get.

To all the people who want to argue the toss about what I can or can't get - don't worry about it.

And there we have it - it isnt a free upgrade to a high end phone at all. You'll end up paying for the phone one way or another, it isnt free.

Therefore keep your iPhone 4 and dont bother.

You are the one who said it was a free upgrade not me.

It is the opportunity for me to obtain a phone at a huge discount over what I would pay if I went into a shop and bought one off contract. An opportunity I could avail of again in 12 months time.

I give up.

Go and buy whatever you want.

Just remember that there is no such thing as a free lunch. They'll recoup the value of the phone from you, be it by charging you more for it in the first place, or whatever.

<bashes head against keyboard>

I am well aware of the fact that there is no such thing as a free lunch. You are the one obsessed with something for nothing.

What I can get is a phone AT A HEAVILY DISCOUNTED PRICE.

As I clearly pointed out earlier on if I upgrade now I can get a high end smartphone for the difference over 12 months between £35 and the £20 I am paying now.

What I am saying is that I can get a smartphone now effectively for 12x£15 which is £180. I can easily sell it for much more than that and be ahead. Don't have me get into opportunity cost.

So you've had it confirmed to you that they will give you a HTC Desire HD, free of charge, for just £35 a month over 12 months?

Or is it just 'a smartphone'? Could easily be something like a Wildfire which is only worth that £180 in the first place?

O2 don't supply the Desire HD at all. Carphone Warehouse will upgrade my account and supply me with a Desire HD for £0 up front on a £35 a month contract. As I have already mentioned the contract is 24 months but I can upgrade again in 12 months time.

So Carphone Warehouse will sell you a contract with a Desire HD for only 12 months? Sure it isnt 24 months? I suspect it's a 24 month contract with an 'upgrade offer' at month 12. You'll take it out then in a years time realise the upgrade offer is pants.

It's now sounding again like you are simply going to walk into a phone shop and take out a contract/upgrade just like anyone else, for no reason at all.

You've got one of the best phones out, why Upgrade for the sake of it, surely you are better off dropping to an excellent SIM only deal (They start at £7.50 a month!) until something thats demonstratably superior to the iPhone is released?

he is far far better of to do that (drop to sim only)

like fox says the cost of the phone is took into account when they price your contract. the upgrade offer after 12 months will be ''you can buy this new phone for half price''

Are you being willfully obtuse?

If I upgrade with O2 I will be moving on to a business tarriff (upgrades every 12 months) or I could move to Vodafone. (Orange and T-Mobile coverage is poor where I live)

Why don't you clicky this linky to the O2 business shop.

http://businessshop.o2.co.uk/great_deals.aspx

On the right hand side (under why O2 Business) you will see they offer upgrades after 12 months.

This is a benefit to being an O2 business customer rather than a consumer customer. The deal from Carphone Warehouse isn't in a shop - it is from their business sales team.

like fox says the cost of the phone is took into account when they price your contract. the upgrade offer after 12 months will be ''you can buy this new phone for half price''

I am aware that the cost of the phone is taken into account. However going from experience O2 offer their business customers upgrades every 12 months at the same prices as new customers.

The tarrifs are more expensive than consumer ones for a start and note it doesnt tell you anywhere what the upgrade is actually too, or whether the handset is free, just that there is no upgrade charge.

As I said, I'd be amazed if you took this deal on a Desire HD and then in 12 months time were offered an upgrade free of charge to a top of the range high end device. Nowhere on the website does it imply this is what happens.

You are simply taking out a contract for no real reason, as you've already got a decent phone and you can simply go SIM only.

As I have now said several times. I have had a business account with O2 for years and have had a full upgrade every 12 months without question.

Can't you just accept you are wrong on this and stop being so obdurate.

Just to be clear here, are you saying you have an O2 business contract that costs £35 per month, and you get a free phone upgrade every 12 months?

Also, just because you've been with them 5 years wont entitle you to amazing deals, it would need to be quite a bit longer than that.

As I have now said several times. I have had a business account with O2 for years and have had a full upgrade every 12 months without question.

Because until recently, everyone got a decent upgrade every 12 months. I used to get a brand new upgrade every 12 months on consumer tariffs. Since the advent of 18 then 24 month contracts, this simply doesn't happen anymore - not to top of the range £500+ handsets, at least.

Do what you want, you obviously know best, but don't cry on here when in 12 months time they offer you a 'free upgrade' to a mid range smartphone, or a top end one 'for only £150'.

I'm with Fox. I don't think they'll let you jump to a top-end phone after 12 months. It'll be something crappy and low-end, or high-end with a fee.
