Hi guys,

Currently have an E6850 and the rest in sig and it sits happily at 3.6ghz. I built a system for a friend with the E8500 and it seemed to overclock a lot easier and he gets better fps at the same clock when converting video files.

I was just wondering if it would be worth me switching to an e8500? Or what other chips are out there? And how much do the E6850 go for 2nd hand?

Thanks.

No I would upgrade your graphics card the cpu at 3.6ghz is still more than enough for a long while yet.

I am [email protected] ghz and radeon 4850 and I can max most things 1680-1050 and they are perfectly playable.

A 4850/4870 would be a very nice upgrade to your rig, as for prices well the problem is the e5200 can hit high 3's and even 4ghz and is £50 ish.
So the 6850 is probably only going to get £50 or less if sold on here where people are clued up but might get more on auction sites.

You are probably looking at an £80 outlay for very little gain So i say no.

if gaming is the main use of your pc, then get a new gpu

if video encoding is the main use, look at a quad core cpu, provided the program you use supports quads

Your cpu is fine at the moment. 45nn Core 2s are generally faster per clock cycle than their older 65nn counterparts, but it's not really worth upgrading from 65nn to 45nn at the moment. I'd wait until Quads become cheaper before upgrading to a 45nn (wolfdale) based one. I would however upgrade your gpu, as 7800 based ones are good for their time, but have been left behind by the newer ones.

Thanks for the advise lads. Only thing about the g/c is, I use a 19" syncmaster @ 1440x900 and the only game is play is css, would you still say it is worth while getting a new card? Also I've also only ever been with Nvidia, but i've seen the ati, 4850 is it? is getting a lot of hype as of late? Is this a better card than the geforce 260?

the 4850s if i remember rightly , are like just below 4870 performance and their quicker then any of the 8800 series afaik and there a cheap gpu youll get a good constant fps on source with one anyways

i got my 4850, and thought DARN i should have went for the better 4870, but to be honest :) i can max out most games i play (appart of Crysis but who cares)

and its cheaper ;)

I have a 7900gto (sold my 4870 in sig - need to change it back...) and it plays CSS on max settings at 1680x1050 piece of cake, so if thats all you do - my advice would be to wait until you play a game that wont run nicely on your machine - then upgrade. :)
