Hi Guys

I'm toying with the idea of upgrading my GTX680 SLI cards - normally I jump a gen so would have been looking at a GTX980 but I'm not sure there is enough value in doing that.

Is it actually a step up to a single card GTX980? The R9 295X2 seems to have an aggressive price - or should I hold fire until the next gen?? Decisions, decisions - any advice welcome..........

Two 290s

/endthread.

Really? Plenty of crossfire/ex-crossfire users myself included who would disagree with that.

OP I think if at the moment you aren't struggling in performance then I would hold off until the R9 300 series hits in June. At least by then prices may have fallen across the board and we'll know if a single R9 series can replace your current setup.

Two 290s cost less than one 980. Each 290 is about 10% slower overall than one 980 so it's an absolute no brainer.

I don't care if Crossfire is a pain. So is SLI and it's no reason to get yourself fleeced out of twice the money for basically the same thing.

Make that closer to 30% and you'll be more in line, I did a comparison excel between my old 290 and previous 980 (stock and OC, I think in the 980 thread).

Anyway I actually agree with you that 290's represent value for money but crossfire is far worse than SLI (speaking as a former 290X Trifire owner) in terms of level of support and availability of profiles. What's the point in paying for two cards if support isn't there in all AAA releases?

Anyway I stand by what I said that unless OP is struggling for performance that he should hold off a couple of months for the new 300 series to drop.

You're right I'm not struggling at the moment - I might wait for the R9 390 and see where they put that in the price vs performance market before I jump.

The only thing was seeing the R9 295X2 at around the £550 mark looked pretty appealing

Then I'd hold off, no point in rushing out and buying something now. Also the 295X2 has been cheaper.

Sorry to jump onto this thread but thought it was better than starting my own as its the same question. :D

bascially i was thinking of changing my two asus GTX780ti direct II to one card

I want to stick with ASUS and the GTX/titan range what card would you recommend or is it just not worth the change?

I run a ASUS gsync monitor..

thanks
