I have an i7 920 D0 running at a modest 3.2GHz OC, but wait... OMG! BF3 is on the horizon and its meant to be CPU intensive. Oh, and out of the corner of my eye I spot the upgrade bug sneaking up on me, ready to rape my wallet. ffs.

So, opinions please. If you were in my situation what would you go for? Is current gen SB worth it over what I have? Or maybe BD, or SB-E in a few months...?

Wait til it's out. Base your judgement on hard facts.

Not to mention a slightly better overclock on your i7 will help a lot.

My current 920 D0 ran the alpha perfectly fine. I agree with Kenmare, get a better cooler if necessary, and OC it to 4.0ghz. Most D0's can do 4.0 without breaking a sweat.

It was an OC bundle from overclockers, but It's never worked properly. I get random BSOD over 3.2GHz when using their profile.

I can try again, perhaps with more voltage, but I'm just a bit nervous about frying it. I've only got a basic grasp of overclocking and its probably not going to get any better.

see the .pdf file on my domain page, click to open, it is an OC for the i7-950 from OCUK.
Yours only has a 20x multi but using 20 x 191 you should get 3.8Ghz with those settings or even 20 x 200 = 4Ghz

Your basic grasp is probably equal to most on these forums.

You should be fine, but if it's really bugging you, then wait until the open beta is out this month, and then make your decision based on that.

Its not a particularly serious thread, so if you want to troll it then go right ahead. But it is an honest question...

I still like my 920, and it doesn't feel particularly slow or out of date yet... But I've got to say that I'm geeking out a bit over BF3, and I'd like to be able to play it maxed. So if that means an upgrade, so be it...

But yeah, good advice here, thanks chaps. I'll try and squeeze some more juice from my OC this weekend, and then see how things go in the beta. I'm not going to throw money at it if I don't need to.

Why haven't you contacted Overclockers if the bundle was unstable?

Mmm, seems like you should be getting this fixed rather than giving up and replacing the whole thing. Make a topic in the customer services forum and it will get replied to :-)

An upgrade from a 920 for gaming would be pointless, (theyre already overkill for games). As said, get it overclocked, 4ghz is a given on theese things. Depending on what gpu you have at the minute, an upgrade of it will provide better gains than a new cpu.

Just re-visiting this thread after the weekend...

I managed to get a stable OC @ 3.8GHz, I just needed to push the core voltage up a bit (thanks again Andy). Even the twitchy BFBC2 game client is happy with it, so I think its pretty good. I will try pushing it up to 4GHz later this week.

To answer some of the other posts:

I play at 1920x1200 with a single GTX 580, which is probably plenty enough for BF3. Although I'm not sure it'll be powerful enough to run with maxed settings, but we'll see what happens during the beta. If I do need a new gfx card I'll probably wait for Southern Islands or Kepler to arrive and then upgrade to the latests high-end single GPU card in that range (I'm not a fan of multi GPU solutions).

Nicely done :) i7 at 3.8GHz should be enough to keep you going until something better than Sandy Bridge is available.
