Upgrade from i7 920 d0

My 920 D0 still handles everything I currently throw at it without breaking a sweat. +1 to stick with what you have unless you need the new tech for encoding etc.

tbh an upgrade is prob not worth it, only if you do video editing, converting etc, or you wanna speed up compression times and decompression times.

Adaptec 51245.

I must have tried about 3 or 4 before i finally found one that worked. X58 seems to have an issue with some RAID chipsets.

£541 is the cheapest I can find on that card.

Sod that! :p

As for upgrading the cpu I would not bother. My i920 DO @ 4.2Ghz is still massively powerful. Have to say for the money it's having a great life span, will go down as the best cpu I've ever owned so far.

Gonna take something really special to make me want to upgrade.

;)

It's a PROPER hardware RAID card. That's why it's fast. I'm running masses of transactions against test databases 24/7 and all I care about is when can I test the next routine? If a routine passes testing I can implement it and invoice the customer. Time is quite literally money.

And it's not just he card, the 8 SSDs weren't cheap when I got them either.

Still very happy with my i7 920, no reason to upgrade it. Runs a bit hot compared to newer chips I guess. Good memory bandwidth on it too.

Same boat. I've had mine a while. In reality the upgrade is not worth it. Plenty of years for my i7 920 yet. Mabye even more ....

well as with everything, it all depends on what you do, in games not a massive difference, but i did notice a big difference in forged alliance, as my i7 930 was clocked to 3.8 and my 3930 is clocked to 4.3, the larger maps do not slow down anywhere near as much as they used to, but thats about it gaming wise,

as for encoding, a typical 800mb xvid to dvd encode took about 4 mins with my i7 930, but with my 3930 it takes about 3 mins, the big difference is with hd video, as i use vidcoder, and if i reencode a 10gb avchd to a 2 gb mkv it takes around 2 hours on my 930 but it takes under 30 mins on my 3930

I've noticed most people in this thread talking about the d0 stepping. I'm on a 920 c0/c1 stepping - is there much difference?

d0 are better clockers, can get a bit more out of them at lower volts and temps than the earlier c0 chips.

Have taken loads of stick for this oc in the past, but it was all my own fault for posting results when i put the Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom fans on the wrong way round, been about 3 months no BSOD happy days i920 4.5ghz HT off, Ht on about 5 degee difference but no point.

2x 7970 oc xfire 60fps at 2560x1440 vsnyc any game all good. Upgrade why lol, plus 18gig of ram (harder to oc with more ram on x58)

It seems there are a few of us in the same boat with 920/930 chips. It feels like it must be time for an upgrade yet the old chip is still doing everything fast enough.
