Right it's time to upgrade my old gaming pc that i gave to my Son. Consists of AMD 3800x2 @ 2500mhz on a dfi lanparty expert with 2gb of muskin redline 3 250gb wd sata hdd and a xfi gamer pci sound card. Oh and an nvidia 8800gt. I'm going to keep the case, gpu, sound card and hdd's. Going to get a new psu as the current one is now 6-7yrs old, new mobo and cpu and possibly a new cpu cooler as i have a zalman 9700 cooler and the case will only except coolers around 150mm high or less. Was thinking of the following, Amd fx6300 in a asus sabretooth AM3+ 990fx r2 or maybe a fx8320. Was going to go intel i5 3570k but that would lead me with no upgrade path later. Already have 2 6gb triple channel kits of ddr3 1600mhz spare from my current i7 930 machine and have bought a wd 500gb cav blue sata 3 Hdd for win 7 64bit o/s. My budget is around £400 - £500 but less would be good. So i need new psu, cpu, mobo, sata dvd drive, win 7 and possibly cpu cooler.Will change the gpu when funds allow in the future, the pc will be used mainly for homework, Social networks and light gaming as my son games on an xbox.

He needs to learn patience ;). Tell him it will be his summer holiday present.

Honosuseri's build is good and will last for a good 5 years or so, assuming you upgrade the 8800GT soon (depends on the sort of games he play though, I assume the heavy titles will still be on the xbox).
 
Ha ha patience, yes looks like a good build. But surprised people not recommended AMD fx 8350 or 8320 or 6300 thought they were ment to be good value for performance? Was thinking of upgrading gpu at Christmas maybe, although I have a 5870 1gb card spare as my backup. Will see if anyone has any further thoughts, but yes looks like a solid build list if not.
 
Would you prefer an AMD build? The 8350 is on par with the 3570k, so I would go for the 8350 if you want AMD. Also, all you would have to do is swap the mobo and the cpu and you would have an AMD build : )

When you say light gaming, how light?

You could reduce the cost by going with Trinity.

I have read A LOT into this, since I am choosing in between the 2 for when I upgrade, and it is kind of situation dependent, however from benchmarks it seems that the 8350 and the 3570k are very close overall, with some fps differences in favor for the 3570k in some major titles, and the 8350 in other major titles, both making good choices.
 
If I went AMD it would also mean I should have an upgrade path with am3+ mobo. Also expect future games to be encoded more for multi core and amd as new consoles are amd hardware. May try to persuade son to hold out alittle longer buy everything apart from cpu and mobo. I also think trinity will be a little lacking.
 
Theres been heavy discussion about this and while the 8350 is 8 cored I highly doubt it will last any longer or even as a long as a i5 for a few very basic reasons.

- It is not a true 8 core chip (4 modules, 2 cores to a module rather than 8 indepenedant cores)
- Its cores are still much less powerful than the Ivy cores
- Not as much overclocking potential as a Ivy chip
- Much higher power usage / runs hotter

Gaming isn't the only usage of a chip.
Which is why a blanket statement of they're "on par" in a fallacy.

There's no "Kind of", it is situation dependant, in two different situations you could have one winning a landslide victory against the other.

Check the bench marks, they both excel in different areas.
 
Wait for Haswell.

Ivybridge is a fantastic chip if you cannot wait.

As mentioned the Piledriver stuff is very application dependent as it relies on software being optimized for more cores, not all games are. Pretty power hungry things as well as being trickier to overclock/cool. That said they are a bit cheaper and have that niche factor lol
