Hi Guys,

I have a Synology DS411J that is a few years old now and was wondering if it is worth upgrading to the newer versions.

I have never found the Synology interface side very fast, especially the time it takes for it to cache photo thumbnails and music etc.

Does anyone know if the latest NAS devices are much of an improvement? My NAS is cabled so wireless would not be a feature that makes a difference to me.

Thanks

I have just bought myself a DS1515+ (one of their newest) which has a Quad Core Atom (2.4ghz) and 2GB of RAM and I am running it over a CAT 6 network.

I will be setting it up this weekend and will let you know how I go.

Thanks but does anyone know sepcifically about the DS411J and if the newer Synology models are worth upgrading to?

ie has there been that much or a jump in technology?

Thanks

I've got a DS415+ and it's awesome. Quad core atom, 2Gb RAM and dual NIC's.

I think the biggest jump is if you get one with the quad core atom processor. Apparently it's a fair bit quicker than the older models.

That was what I was saying I have just bought the Synology DS1515+ which is Synology's newest product.

I am still in the process of getting all my data over to it but all I can see is it is very fast and has done everything I need so far.

The DS415+ is a really good buy, not quite as feature rich as the DS1515+ but it has the same CPU and RAM which are more than enough for most people's needs.

The reason I went for the DS1515+ over the DS415+ is because I preferred the idea of having an enclosed power supply and an extra drive bay.

If I were you I would look at upgrading to either a DS415+ or a DS1515+ depending on your needs. As mentioned the Quad Core processor is leaps and bounds better than the DS411J.

Those models are super overkill for the average home user. Not many people have a managed switch for trunking the connections and not many will be running VMware installs on a daily basis.

The ds414j is a big jump in specs over the 411j.

I went for the ds414 (non j), very happy with it

Depends really, I was pretty sure the DS414 doesn't transcode very well if at all.

This may be something he needs if he is running video to a source that doesn't support MKV for example.

The DS414 was replaced by the DS415+ and so is a year newer.
