A neighbour has a AMD 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ AM2 CPU and is looking to upgrade.

Mostly photoshop work with some gaming.

Motherboard is AM3 compatible.

How much of an improvement is the AMD PII X3 Tri Core 720 BE 2.8GHz over the X2 4400?

Also, is the AMD PII X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz much of an improvement over the X3?

Some X3 processors have working fourth cores in them which means the disabled core can be unlocked and used. It would be dependent on the motherboard your friend buys and whether or not the core is actually defective.

The link above explains the differences between the models and gives you some figures.

The Tri core 720 is a cracking little processor, mates got one and for £92 its really good! He would see a considerable improvement, especially if you clock it for him! The 955 is £53 more for an extra core and an extra 400Mhz clock, worth it? check out some photoshop benchies if you can find any!

Photoshop doesnt really increase in its performance past 3 cores, according to some tests found on review sites. It would be best to stick with and x3, and to look at using GPU acceleration in photoshop to improve speed.
