So I am upgrading my gaming pc at the moment.

Currently:
Motherboard Asrock B450 ITX
CPU Ryzen 5 2600
CPU cooler Cryorig H7 Cooler
GPU RX590
Ram 16GB

Just got a 2nd hand cpu 5700x and now looking at GPU’s. Been told by few people to consider an Arc a770, apparently they are good value for money. I am trying to keep my GPU under £300 if I can help it. Open to some sensible suggestions.

Honestly despite owning a ARC A750 (and a A770) since launch (mainly to test with), I would be looking at a used RX 6750 (not sure if 6800 can be had south of £300 yet) or Nvidia 3070 or equivalent. If new then a RX 6650 / 7600 or equivalent.

The ARC card will do well in most games against the direct competition but the current pricing is a bit meh (using OCUK as an example the ARC A770 is £90 more than the A750 (what the...?) and ~£60 more than the RX 7600.

For context the A770 is generally 10% faster than the A750 in the same games at the same settings (from my own testing) thus the price increase is not justifiable at all.
 
As above, AMD will be better value for money at that budget.

Intel's drivers has gone through a lot of improvements ever since Arc was released, but it still has a few teething issues, and depending on the games you play, may end up giving you more headaches. Next gen Battlemage sounds promising based on what Intel has mentioned about it, but it's not out yet and whether it lives up to their claims, only time will tell.

Compare it to a 6750 XT because that's what you can buy for £300.

You have to look at recent driver reviews though, because performance has changed a lot since launch and some of the outliers (really bad games, I mean, that drive down the averages) have been addressed.

I think you'll find that Intel's upscaling is often superior to FSR, but the performance still comes out under the 6750 XT.

If you do anything other than gaming, especially it is AI/HPC related, then the A770 will win in that.

Not sure I agree. My 7900xtx for example, can render with Redshift, there's no GPU renderer I know of that supports the Intel ARC cards, likewise it supports everything in UE outside the obviously NVidia based tech. Radeon support in content creation is generally wider than Arc by a long way.
Not say to Arc is bad or not worth considering, but I would be VERY cautious about saying its a better choice than Radeon outside of gaming.

The reason I mentioned AI/HPC is because RDNA 2 (in the 6750 XT I was comparing with) didn't have dedicated AI cores, whereas RDNA 3 (in your 7900 XTX) often has much better performance than RDNA 2 partly because of those upgrades. The Arc can be like... twice as fast as the equivalent RDNA 2 card in AI workloads.

I wasn't thinking about 3D/rendering work, but from what I've seen of rendering benchmarks, they had the A770 as much faster than RDNA 2. I don't know enough to comment on the renderers/plugins though, or if those benchmarks are applicable.

Yeah, I don't know that much about the AI stuff, to be fair, but RCom or whatever it is seems to be getting some traction.
I'm fairly sure Radeon support in Content Creation is overall a lot broader. I think as ever, it's important to check the exact software you're using, because it could vary wildly.

If the likes of Puget don't mention it and include it more widely in their benchmarks I'll probably stay ignorant unfortunately :o

Yeah, driver updates change things a lot too. Most of Arcs performance doesn't even show up in the early benchmarks 'cos they weren't well optimised and it seems to require more manual work than other cards to pull that extra performance out of it. The hardware features are more equivalent to Ada and RDNA 3 though, so RDNA 2 does get left behind a lot, from what I've seen.
 
I think the A770 is a great card, for the price. I wouldn't always recommend it though, as there will be headaches.
DXVK is pretty good for sorting out some games that don't work well, but others you just need to wait for the Intel driver team to get a release out.
Some older (15/20 years older) just don't run at all.

If you can get the 6700xt or better, then do that.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, sounds like the Arc A770 maybe a bit of a pain, not as my friend described. Might stick with a AMD card or might just stick with my Rx590 for a bit longer.
 
There haven't been many issues for me at all, but it would be lies to say there haven't been any. And the issues are things you just wouldn't have on the AMD/Nvidia alternatives.
