Hi all,

I’ve been looking at the OCUK shop and reading about Ryzen CPUs on - I'm beginning to get the upgrade itch again. Still being somewhat out of the game, I need some upgrade help...

I’m looking to use it mainly for Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Indesign, Adobe Photoshop and sometimes gaming every few months, (Warhammer 2: Total War or Witcher 3). I’m aware I have an ageing rig but what are my current bottlenecks? Should I just bite the bullet and go for a complete rebuild? Is it worth bothering at all?

Here is my current rig:

PSU: Be Quiet BQT L67-530W

Mobo: MSI 770-C45 (MS-7599)

CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T - 3.2 GHz Six Core (HDT90ZFBGRBOX) Processor

GPU: Asus R9 270 2GB DC2OC 2GD5

DDR: Crucial (BLS4G3D1609DS1S00) 2x4gb DDR3 PC3-12800 (800mhz) • 9-9-9-24 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.5V • 512Meg x 64

HDD: Samsung SSD 830 120gb / Raptor 70gb / WD740GD-00FLA2 280GB

LCD Monitor: 27" CrossOver 2795QHD (hacked to 96hz)

Peripherals:
Saitek Eclipse keyboard
Logitech G203 Prodigy Gaming Mouse - Optical 6,000 DPI, 16.8M Colour LED Customizing Wired Gaming Mouse
Fellowes Mouse Pad with Microban Antibacterial Protection - Black

@ERU
wow, what res do you game at but hope to game at ?

will link this hear from another post myself and others commented on. look at the vids

Granted yours is 6 cores instead of 3 cores - 6 threads but fx 6300 can run a lot higher overclock

Worth a look at total warhammer 1 reviews to see how it compares with different cards- places liek OC3D test how much Vram a game uses at what settings but norm now is over 2 to 3.4 GB is used at Medium + settings

For anyone interested, I've now decided on the following balanced build:

CPU
: AMD Ryzen 1600x

HSF: I've got a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo that should fit the above.
The cooler will need an AM4 mounting bracket though, as the AM3 won't work! However, CM will supply one for free: http://www.coolermaster.com/amd-am4-...patability/en/

Motherboard: MSI B350 TOMAHAWK Socket AM4 ATX Motherboard

DDR: Patriot Viper 4 16GB (2x 8GB) 3200MHz DDR4 RAM
As Ryzen is gimped if paired with lower speeds.

GPU: I'm going past budget for a upgraded graphics card, so the current Radeon R9 270 2GB will stay for now. I'll look about for a good offer (possibly 2nd hand) on a RX470/RX570 for under £200.

SSD/HDD: Recycling my old Samsung 830 120gb. I'll also use a newly purchased Seagate (ST2000DM006) Barracuda 2tb HDD 7200rpm for general storage.

PSU: My old Be Quiet BQT L67-530W

Case: Sunbeam ATX Mid Tower Case

LCD Monitor: 27" CrossOver 2795QHD (hacked to 96hz)

Peripherals:
Saitek Eclipse keyboard
Logitech G203 Prodigy Gaming Mouse - Optical 6,000 DPI, Wired
Fellowes Mouse Pad with Microban Antibacterial Protection - Black

Quick suggestions , 1600 over the X, I know the X is on a price offer but you don't get a cooler and seems stock cooler does well , or use your current one and save £10 on the core

Would also choose the Gaming 3 or Strix over the MSI board. Those two are most quoted boards here for the reason of it works and works well with the selected memory . Strix can run 3333hz with 8 packs own ram.
Also Gigabyte rep support on here

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £549.02
(includes shipping: £11.10)

Also, £40 over your £200 GPU budget

Or this great deal on pre-order

Thanks - I'll keep watching and waiting for both CPU (I expect Coffee Lake will make Ryzens tumble a bit...) and GPU (searching 2nd hand atm) prices for now.

So far I've purchased:

Motherboard: MSI B350 TOMAHAWK Socket AM4 ATX Motherboard *Open Box*

DDR: Patriot Viper 4 16GB (2x 8GB) 3200MHz DDR4 RAM

HDD storage drive: Seagate ST2000DM006 Barracuda 2000 GB Hard Drive

CPU HSF: From CoolerMaster - free but had to pay P&P

good to hear its under way- not to sure if you've read memory/ryzen threads on here about ram issues with ryzen?
Has greatly increased since launch but if ram isn't on the boards support list - might have a pain getting it to work at rated speed. Mostly why I and other quote Gaming 3 and Strix board with certain kits as we know they work with less tweaking .
not to say your ram wont work at all or at rated speed but just a heads up.
have a look at some MSI threads on that board - when you first load it up- just keep everything default stock speeds and update the bios and do all the installing / updating you need to do- then get to work on the OC- then the ram :D

I've been playing about a bit more and can't get 3200mhz to boot. I've started to increase the voltage, but have no idea what's safe - so being conservative. Best I've got stable so far is:

CPU-z Memory (RAM)

Total Size: 16384 MB
Type: Dual Channel (128 bit) DDR4-SDRAM
Frequency: 1532.4 MHz - Ratio 3:46
Timings: 18-18-18-38-72-1 (tCAS-tRC-tRP-tRAS-tCS-tCR)
Slot #1 Module: Patriot Memory 8192 MB (DDR4-2137) - XMP 2.0 - P/N: 3200 C16 Series

@ERU only worked with Strix and Gaming 3 so can't offer much help but your between the sweet spot of 3000 to 3200hz so your all good.

Ram can go 1.45v just fine and SoC voltage 1.1 - could try 1.2 and then lower.
If MSI have ram voltage boot option then set at 1.45v as well.

Try with training option on and off it it allows

I 'almost' thought I'd cracked 3200 mhz (3198 mhz):

I achieved the above by upping the DDR's V-Core. I'm currently on 1.440v and may push onto 1.490v next ... but I'm getting cold feet! I have no idea what's safe?

Update 1: It seems the new BIOS update also lets me run the DDR4 @ 32000mhz too!

Update 2: I've bought a Adata XPG SX6000 256GB M.2-2280 SSD @ £70.13 and it's nown installed:
