Upgrade help specifically for MMORPG's.

While I'm waiting to see what Ryzen 2 brings, I have managed to get the 2500k to 4.3 by being a bit more agressive on the v core, temps under 70 on prime and v core at 1.362 max using offset(no option for manual v core on budget mobo). Tried going to 1.392 for 4.4, but not stable O.o Think either my 2500k was a bit of a lemon or I've missing something.

Does anyone think 2700x is a contender for me please? Or is 8700k still likely to be the "king" for mmorpg's? Can't find any benchmarks for anything I would be likely to play :D

8700/8700k will have edge in most due to speed and design . But that game I linked spec for shows newer games starting to be better coded for .

8700+ b360 and ryzen 2700+x470 is bit cheaper then 8700k+z370

Thanks, been reading up on the req's, apparently the req's on the list are way ott, it's using unreal engine 3 and while it can use many cores, the main cpu hungry elements are only on 1/2 cores?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0M_NDX5RL7M Shame he does not talk about fps in crowded areas :D

If I save on the cpu I can get a 980 ti sooner... but at the same time I don't want to be upgrading the cpu for another 5 years ideally... (2500k for 7 years has been fantastic!) :D

Elder Scrolls Online is about to overhaul its engine in the newest patch for the Summerset Isles expansion and they specifically stated better Multicore Support and Optomization. Hopefully other MMO developers follow suit, MMORPGs like most multiplayer games would really benefit from decent Multicore usage.

Thank you all for the help.

Finally decided and went with the 8700k, ASRock z370 Extreme4(read a fair few reviews and hope did the right thing... seems about on par with the ultra gaming 2.0, but a bit less money, not into Far Cry tbh... so... :) ) and the 16gb 8 pack 3200 ram. Did consider going with one of the bit cheaper CPU options, but really want this to last atleast 4 years (my 2500k did great!), so figure best off paying a little more and getting a bit more future proof chip, higher end chips from a socket seems to hold their re-sale value better too.

Still a bit undecided with the cooling, removing the top part of the ram heatsinks and adding a D15 is what I'm currenty thinking... as long as I can hit 4.7-4.8 on all cores without a delid, in my Zalman Z11 Plus case then I'll be happy.

Wondering if I should add a couple of 140mm fans to my case?

It's a solid board, lot say their bios is nice and simple to use. Be sure to get some snaps up of the build before and after !

Do you already have D15 ? Dark rock Pro 4 been redesigned for taller ram and easier to mount. Should get same temps as D15 but quieter

good choice. my recommended mobo as ocuk still don't stock gb ultra 2.0 yet...(or have they now?)

16gb 8 pack 3200 ram

you can go with cheaper 3200mhz ram if you want. intel aren't as ram sensitive as compared with ryzen.
so you can get the low profile ram for £30 if required.
would also help with cooler compatibility

z11+ is unable to fit a 240mm rad unfortunately without modding
so for adequate cooling, it's one of those 1kg monsters hanging off the mobo :D

I don't currently have the D15, but seems it will just about fit in my case with the front fan raised 5mm to allow for the 37mm memory (without heatsinks).

Did read one review saying that the pro 4 was weaker in terms of cooling than the pro 3 when a oc is oc'd? (apparently due to the 2nd fan running 500 rpm slower than on the 3)

Cheers, I did think of using the cheaper 3200 ram, but in the other thread Orbital said he has found using the 8 park ram worth the premium on intel, gaining on the minimum fps.

true, but need to tradeoff with price and compatibility (in op's case - if he removes the heatsinks that's all warranty voided)

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews...Memory_Performance_Benchmark_Analysis/11.html
op read up here :p

Have read the link, but being a bit out of it tech wise, seems 3200 cl14 is not a bad choice then? Or I'm missing something?

With regards to the warrenty the ocuk listing says they can be removed, so I don't think I'd have any issues with the warrenty?

"The total height of the range is approximately 45,6 mm and should be kept in mind when choosing a CPU cooler. The heat dissipation capacity of the Dark Pro series is also especially high, meaning that they have plenty of cooling capacity spare during overclocking. Furthermore the PCB cover of the heatspreader can be removed, which reduces the total height to just 37 mm and markedly increases compatibility with larger CPU coolers."

Not sure the dark rock can be made to fit 37mm (need to check), but I know I'd need to raise the front fan 5mm if I went with the D15.

Seems a bit risky handing a 1kg+ cooler on a mobo... but I assume they have been tested and are safe enough? O.o

If you have a bit more money to invest, the next good option is 3200 MHz memory, with CL14 or CL15. 3200 MHz CL16 is roughly equal to 3000 MHz CL14 in speed, so consider that option too.
Coffee Lake, on the other hand, also sees good gains from improved timings, which often makes it more sensible to buy lower latency memory than to go for the highest clock speed you can find.

yeah, didn't realise until orbitalwalsh pointed it out. my bad.

yes, if you don't keep moving your computer around

Thanks both.

I'm planning to use 2x 140mm for intake and my existing 3 120mm fans (not great ones, but already have them!) for outtake.

Thinking about going for a double pack of Corsair ML140 (non pro) fans (sound reasonable, fairly quiet and not too costly!), would this be suitable alongside either the pro 4 or d15 please? Or is there something better for around the same money please? (I don't really care about the aesthetics :D )

Don't want to ask me about fans.. I run £20 per fans.. X by a lot of them haha .

But having extra intake fans is only a good thing :) have equal number for exhaust to keep a netural air pressure then should be good
