right now i've got a q6600 at 3.00 and 4 gig ddr2 and a crappy 250gb hard drive (for os and games) on a p45 m/b, thinking of getting:

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66GHz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) OEM £167.99

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard £156.98

Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 (1600MHz) Low Latency Tri-Channel (PVT36G1600LLK) £149.99

Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD1002FAEX) £76.59

total: £576.11

Or would this be better:

*OVERCLOCKED* Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz @ 4.00GHz / Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Motherboard / Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel DDR3 Bundle

total £599.98

and get the hard drive later (for sake of guaranteed 4ghz)

buget is £600 and i use my system for abit of everything (gaming, encoding, 3d stuff).

thxs

Most D0s will hit 4GHz without _too_ much hassle so you might as well have the fun of trying to overclock yourself. Good choice of HDD too, pretty much the quickest 1TB drive out there atm.

I say get the latter. If you spend a lot of time on CPU intensive tasks the latter bundle will enable you to save time in doing it (The overclock will save time with speedier rendering etc).

If you are not into overclocking yourself, then that bundle will suit. Of course there are some who will say to try overclocking yourself, but for convenience that bundle fits all the requirements. I think that motherboard has USB 3 and Sata 3 as well (I think I read a review somewhere).

Personally i would'nt bother. The Q6600 is a fantastic cpu and should be able to clock beyond the 3Ghz you have it running at. The price paid for the performance is gained is simply not worth it. By all means get a better hdd or maybe even a SSD.

The fact that 1156 is EOL Q1 2011 and 1366 is EOL in Q3 2011 is worth thinking about too.

I would say overclock the Q6600 to 3.6GHz or a bit more for now. With you motherboard being a P45 chipet set motherboard, it should be doable without much trouble...unless it's a really poorly made board.

Save upgrading till Intel's next architechture CPU.

i dont think i can get any more out of my chip :( my q6600 needs too much voltage, the board is solid its just my cpu thats lacking.

*edit its a p35 not 45 (p35 abit xe pro) it takes 1.4050 to keep my chip at 3006 dont think i can up it to the voltage required for 3600

Pick up a decent cooler and see if you can get a bit more out of your chip, make sure the cooler is also 1366 compatible for when you do decide to upgrade.

the cooler i've got is a asus silent knight 2, if i buy a corsair H50-1 CPU Watercooler would i get a much better overhead heat wise to o/c??

,thanks for the help so far lads :)
