Hi all,

My current PC is starting to show its age using my 1440p monitor.

I currently have:

CPU: i5 6600k
GPU: GTX 1070
Memory: 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4

I am looking for my best bang for buck upgrades to bring my PC back from the dead when trying to run more modern titles at 1440p.

Looking to keep the costs as low as possible but I am realistic about the fact I may need to pay a bit more.

Thanks

Set up alerts and try and get a 3060ti FE @£369 or 3070FE /ti @£469/£529

Best VFM CPU is currently the 11400F @£150 but it's hard to find in stock although in around a month the 12th gen will be out and the 12400F is looking good especially if it keeps the same pricing.

Ryzen 5 5600X @£250 is another option but with the above GPUs you won't gain any more performance at 1440p so the extra £100 would be best spent on the next tier of GPU up which would boost performance.

Budget is not a massive concern for me within reason.

just needs to be cost effective relative to performance.

would just like to understand the upgrade path.

what to do first etc for gaming at 1440p.

1440p gaming is mainly gpu restrictive. Upgrading your 1070 will make the most difference overall.
A 3060ti would be in general 50%+ faster than your old 1070 and thats something a cpu upgrade wont achieve.

A cheap cpu upgrade for you would be a i7 6700K for about £100. It woud give you another 4 threads. it might help you in a few well thread optimized games but as said above would probably be better off going towards a 3070/ti over a 3060ti.

So start with buying a 3070.

followed by upgrading mobo / cpu etc.

can anyone post me some recommendations which have stock availability.

Best VFM CPU’s right now is the Ryzen 1600AF and 5600G.

But for an RTX card at 2560x1440 I’d probably say go higher end on the CPU, motherboard and RAM. Ampere is a system resource hog.

The first thing to do is install telegram and join channel FE PartAlert which will ping you with a link to the FE cards when they drop, there's not been a drop since the 23/9 so there is a good chance some will land this week, they tend to sell out quick in 5-10 mins although the 3070ti 3080ti and 3090 normally last for 30 mins +

The 5600G is not good VFM as its slower than a 10400F when used with a DGPU yet costs around £80 more, while the 1600AF is a decent CPU for the price it's based on Zen + so is a bit slow for gaming when paired with the latest GPUs.

The 5600G is great VFM. It’s a lower cost lower power 5600X.

The 1600AF works really well with any GPU apart from Nvidia RTX. The 1600AF still works well but Nvidia takes circa 15-20% more CPU power to operate.

The 5600G is too costly for its gaming performance.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £428.68 (includes shipping: £8.70)

The 11400f at that price is like the Nvidia FE cards. Vapour ware. To get the most performance out it and off set the graphics card overhead you also need a pretty high board and cooling.

The 11400F power draw in gaming workloads isn't much different to the 5600X but yeah it's hard to get because it's popular and pretty much the best budget gaming CPU out there right now.

The 10400F is in stock on OCUK for £150 and still outpaces the £240 5600G although the 12400F should be out in a month or so and has a faster SC speed than a 5950X so should be very strong for gaming.

The 11400F is vapourware and unless you can A, find one and B, are on a very tight budget it’s not a good match for an RTX graphics card.

Thank you for the inputs, it’s so difficult in this day and age to determine what upgrades to make, if any.

might be worth by the sounds of it to do the following -
  1. Buy a new GPU as this is the biggest bottleneck on my system currently for 1440p
  2. Buy a new CPU / Mobo
some choices around those 2 points would be awesome.

what i see currently is that a 3070 is around 800-900

Just looking for options to make my computer viable again for now and into the future at different price points.

The GPU market will be borked until Intel release its ARC graphics cards. Prices should then drop.
The desktop CPU market is pretty healthy. Low end is still under pressure.

Overclock the current system to within an inch of its existence?

My current system does not like to be overclocked in the slightest, it ***** itself on anything above standard really badly, cant even activate XMP in bios.

it just kills me not being able to play games properly, the tipping point was the BF BETA, the PC could barely run the game even on the lowest settings in everything so its got me thinking its time to upgrade...

It’s the CPU in BF. Quad core i5 and i7 really are an antiquated design.

maybe a bad example, New world being another example of it not being up to scratch, everything on low.

full specs:
i5 6600k
Z170xp-SLI
VENGEANCE LPX 16GB (2X8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHZ DUAL CHANNEL KIT
RoG GTX1070
Samsung 960 SSD

antiquated build too.....

Monitor is an XB271HU

Intel just dragged out the ring bus based quad core for too long. The 4770K should have probably been the last quad core with 4970K or 5775C moving to 6 cores.

That's why the founders edition cards are the only ones worth considering as they are sold at MSRP, all AIB cards are a rip off.

Founders card will probably be dropping at some point this week but you need to do some preparation to get one.
