Hi,

I originally built my PC way back in 2013 and have been upgrading it ever since.

I have an EVGA GTX 1080 - it's getting a old and would like to upgrade to a newer graphics card.

I have done some research and the AMD RX 6800 XT seems to be a good card for the price, it is currently available around £599 (Overclockers UK).

My monitor is G-Sync however I am willing to overlook that, as I may get a new monitor in the next 12 months.

I am not that knowledgeable on PC buildng, so I am looking for help on understanding if the 6800 XT would work well with my build, or if there's a better option out there.

Hoping to run new games at 100hz 1440p.

Losing gsync for up to 12 months is a bad idea imo.

I would get an nvidia card so gsync continues to work. Then if you get a new monitor make sure it's "freesync with gsync compatible" so you aren't brand restricted by it.

If however you're really committed to getting an amd card and replacing the monitor then do both things at the same.

Is something wrong with the monitor?

Nothing wrong with the monitor, I haven't updated any of my setup in a few years so it was just an idea. Maybe a daft one considering it's still working fine.

Is there a Nvidia card you would recommend for upgrading in my situation? The 3080 is around £140 more expensive than the 6800XT but would have G-Sync.

If money really matters you could get a 3070, but tbh prolly better just paying the extra to get a 3080.

But if money really mattered you wouldn't be replacing a working gpu at all, and wouldn't have a giant monitor that needs a pricey gpu to run well.

The FE cards are coming back in stock fairly regularly, though I haven't seen any 3080s. Still, if they do, it would only be £50 more. The 6800 XT does seem to be a relatively good deal right now, though we don't know what drops might come with black friday & when AMD release in mid-December.

I had that monitor a couple of years ago and the colours were very washed out and not of a quality I was happy with. I swapped to a newer IPS LG 3440x1440 that is only 60hz but the colours are so much more saturated and it is a nicer monitor to use imho.

There are a whole host of new monitors being released in Q1 2023 so I would suggest you wait and do not make a gpu purchase until you know what monitor you get in the end. I am also in the market for a new monitor next year and I am hoping for a 5k2k 40" OLED with 144hz but not sure that type of monitor is being released, if one is I will pay whatever it costs and be set for next 5 years.

3440x1440 is half the pixels of 4k so a 3070ti or 6800xt work just fine with it. The 3080 stretches its advantage at 4k but is not that much faster than a 3070ti at your res and is slower in most titles at that res than 6800xt unless RT is enabled.

Curveball here. If you have a huge desk then there are currently deals on the LG C2 42" OLED and even though it is a TV it is also excellent as a gaming monitor, not perfect for text clarity but is useable. If I see it for under 700 around black friday I am not sure I will be able to resist.

So many choices at the moment but if you can wait then it is normally a good idea..especially until RDNA3 cards are released.
