Upgrade? Is it worth it?

I'd like to say hi to all in here first of all.

And secondly I currently have an x1900xt 256mb. I'm wanting to upgrade to a more powerful card for some of the recent and forthcoming games. So I can run em at high specs, though my res will never go above 1280x1024.

What would anyone recommend? £200 - £250 bracket.

I'm running an OC'd opteron 165, 2gb of corsair XMS with a DFI infinity mobo.

Thanks in advance

Would just go for the 320Mb version IMHO if you will never go over 1280*1024.

640Mb is useful at 1920*1200+, but then it's not like the GTS can manage decent framerates at that resolution anyway.

After discussing it with LoadsaMoney and Tom|Nbk, who both use the 320MB GTS, it seems that I can use higher levels of antialiasing in games like Oblivion at 1680x1050 and other "standard" resolutions.

If you aren't interested in maxing out the AA with supersampling or anything though, 320MB for the win. :)

Good to hear, only reason I said that was after reading this issue of CPC which reviewed several GTS, showing min. 25FPS with FEAR and PREY at 1920*1200. But then it can be a completely different story with other games.

Yeah 320mb GTS is ideal for 1280x1024 (my res here), its the same as the 640mb version right upto 1600x1200, its only higher resloutions than that where the 640mb makes a difference, and the GTS will destroy your x1900, and it has much better image quality to.

Welcome to the forums btw. :)

At 1280x1024, Fear maxed out with 2xAA/16xAF is minimum 58, average is about 107, and maximum is over 200 for me. :D

Good review here of the 320mb BFG OC GTS, and the XFX 320mb GTS at 1280x1024 with the 640mb GTS. :)
