I have the itch to upgrade from my 5970 [5870 got given to a friend] and i'm curious as to what would be a sufficient single GPU upgrade with more VRAM?
 
It only requires 1 slot though although the size will take up other expansion slots, but even lower end cards do that. I think he means no xfire or sli but I'll wait for his response.

Nothing really worth upgrading to at the moment, personally I'd wait a while. But if you really cant wait, and you want to spend money just for the sake of it, then the 7970 is about your only choice until kepler arrives. Personally I'm going to wait for GK112, but that's not likely to arrive until Q4.
 
I don't know what res you play at, 1440p iirc?, but in your shoes I'd be looking at no lower than a 2.5gb 570, for AMD I'd probably wait for the 7950. The 7970 is indeed an option, but it probably wouldn't be one for me as in my case 1200p might not push it hard enough anyway.
