Currently running on an overclocked i7 2600k quite happily for more than 4 and a half years now, but I'm tempted by an x99/5820k upgrade given the price.

The thing is I only really use my pc for gaming nowadays and I run at 1440p so the cpu is going to have less of an impact on performance. I've been mainly playing BF4/BFH recently and will be playing the new Battlefront no doubt when it comes out at the end of this year. Will an upgrade like this improve performance much in these games based on my current setup (see sig)?

Thoughts? Worth it or just sit tight for now?

id sit tight for now and see if you really need the boost later when battlefront comes. im still flogging my 2500k and resisting the upgrade urge for now.

Keep what you have and save your money. If you are only gaming then you won't see much difference going to the 5820k

It's amazing how long this setup is lasting. Still ended up with my finger over the buy button earlier for a 5820k setup, but I'm doing my best to resist.

I'm feeling the itch too but I know from reading the forums that my 2600k is still good for some time to come. I used to buy the latest tech when it came out no matter what but not upgraded my board chip for years. Got a 980ti though which burns through games :)

I was in the same boat - unbelievably last week the 5820K was on special at a well known competitor website for £220 and I jumped at the chance.

Enjoying those 6 cores very much

I think I would have jumped at that price. Just been reading about it on hot deals :)

It's actually pretty hard to find any games where a better CPU would matter / make any difference. And newer Intel CPUs aren't really getting any faster anymore. The only significant reason for you to upgrade would be to get a lower system TDP / less fan noise. And to do that would call for 14nm/16nm parts. Wheras xeons are still 22nm for the time being.

I still havnt seen any reason to upgrade my i7 920. its 7 years old now and BF4 hovers around the 60% mark at 1080p on high settings. Same for GTA V around 65%, Elite Dangerous around 30%. I think I will see 10 years out of it ;)

Another 2500K user here with an itch but no real reason to jump as a BF4/Insurgency player. Oh and Arma3, which is pretty CPU intensive but currently not showing enough of a jump with new processors to warrant a whole new setup.
