Hi first my specs i7 4770 @4.3Ghz / z97 mobo / 16 gig of ddr3 2400c16 / gtx 980ti oc / samsung evo ssd 750 gig / Benq 3200 monitor I have the itch to upgrade especialy with coffee lake out tomorrow the only thing is the stupid price of gfx cards ie £780 for a 1080ti should i wait another year or so for next gen gfx or bite the bullet and upgrade now.
I keep saying to myself your good, games you play atm run fine @1440p and you don't need to spend 3k on a new system on the other hand if i don't get it soon the wife will spend it on a cruise and it seems a waste to me, 2 weeks on a ship or a new pc....... hmmmmmm?

I have the same itch, but giving into it will only give me minor upgrade right now and will just get a few more FPS for a lot of money. The same for you I think... Your PC seems decent, it plays the games you want, it doesn't sound like you are using it heavily, so upgrading for day to day PC usage wont gain you much apart from a hole in your wallet. If you want 4K gaming then an upgrade would be good, but it will cost you a lot. 2 weeks on a cruise doesnt sound like much fun though... Cant you go somewhere better for that money? :P

That's a decent setup.

No point in spending all that money for something slightly better.

I'd wait at least another year.

If you want, you could always buy a nice new case, then it would look all new and shiny again :)

I ve managed to keep my upgrade itch in control lol, kind of felt bad after getting all hyped up, spending money, wasting time building and then playing or doing the same stuff that previous pc was capable off xD, your system is still good so if you havent experienced the cruise ship i ll say go for it depending on where cruise ship city stops are , it will be a good experience or go somewhere else.

I wouldn't. You still have a very good setup. To be honest I am not enthused by any of the new cpu's from either side. AMD doesn't have the single core performance that I need for my older games and Intels pricing is just ridiculous. Going by Intels past releases Coffeelake is most likely a 5-10% gain over Kabylake with the option to have a pair of extra cores. If you want the eight core cpu's that are supposedly coming next year it looks like that will require yet another chipset (Z390) according to this.

I'll be sticking with my 6700k at 4.6ghz for at least a few years.

CPU advances have been snail like over the past 5 years and I can't see that changing.

It's always nice to "upgrade". Especially when new hardware releases, but the sensible way to do things is upgrade when you actually need to.

The amount of times I've "upgraded" and it's actually been nothing more than a side grade is ridiculous. My most recent was going from a 6700k to a 5820k, I literally noticed no difference day to day.

If there are games that you play (or intend on playing) that your current rig can't cope with, or give the performance you're after then look at upgrading.

If you were looking at upgrading though, then it wouldn't cost you that much to be fair (the 3 grand you stated), say 8700k worst case £400, then £200 for a motherboard, £200 for ram and then a 1080ti £700 you're at £1500 and you'd have a monster system. That leaves £1500 for your wife's cruise lol.

I've also been generous on parts prices, the cpu might actually be £350, motherboard £150, cheaper ram etc and you're sorted. Obviously you could use your existing case, psu, storage etc...

Thanks for all your input and yes you all make a valid point but i decided to go with this

That's a interesting read z390 mobo

Still rocking 4770k and a 780 and the only reason I’m thinking of upgrading is because I game at 1080 @144mhz and now deciding I may make the jump to 1440p so I would have minimum a monitor and GPU to splash out on.

Like others have said your spec is still decent and Volta is out next year so bear that in mind, personally I’d wait

I was still using my 3570k up until the other week and upgraded to a 3770k for VR in certain games otherwise I would've still been using my old one. I really don't feel like spending money will net me any great gains. Infact if it wasn't for VR I would probably still be using my 970 too!

Looks like the wife wins out and gets her cruise the reason i'm not keen is i spent 18 years in the Royal Navy :p Talk about busmans holiday
