Upgrade Itch

Does anyone have the USB calibration device for their Sigma lens? Hearing mixed reviews on whether you need this or not, one user said HSM did not work with his 35mm on his 600d until connecting it to the usb device.

If you have micro adjust on the body then you just do it on the body, especially with a prime. If you can imagine you have 2 bodies and you calibrate the lens on the dock to be perfect one 1 body, what are you going to do to the 2nd body?

Any particular reason why you didn't want to calibrate? I've heard the dock is only about £40 and works for a range of sigma lenses.
I was hardly filled with confidence that a brand new product would require such callibration. This wasn't a little bit off, this was way off! Serious doubts in my mind about Sigma's QC, not at all what I was expecting and certainly not what I had been led to believe by all the glowing reviews out there. Also niggling me was that maybe there was an AF issue? The 16-35 in particular was very slow to lock on, the 17-50 was better but way slower than any other lens I have. I was very dissappointed. I'm currently considering Tamron, not had a chance to play with anything yet though.

I needed the micro adjust on my sigma. I think it was focusing to close and needed nearly the max adjustment my 70d had to fix it. 1.4 does produce a very narrow focus slice!

Couldn't use it in my 60d because of that

The dock is great for firmware updates but I wouldn’t use it to calibrate the lens, micro adjust on the sensor does the job.

The micro adjust on the body applies the same adjustment no matter the focusing distance. The sigma dock allows you to change the micro adjustment based on what focusing distance the lens is set at. Some people report back focusing at minimum distance but front focusing at infinity for example.

Just been going through some of the pics I took from my last holiday with my current lens and I'm now kind of torn on whether I just want a new lens for the sake of it and whether it will actually help improve on anything.

I was pretty happy overall with the image quality of my sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 and not sure if a f/1.8 will improve my images by some margin or not.
